Hey guys. I just purchased a brand new primered hood because of an accident. I was wondering if I can apply sealant or wax on top of it. I am not planning to paint it anytime soon because I am now broke. Thanks guys. :dblthumb2:

Primer unlike the finish coat is porous. It mechanically bonds to the metal and due to its design allows provides the paint a perfect surface to adhere to.

While I've never applied sealants or waxes to primer I can only speculate that this would do more harm than good and completely stripping the hood prior to finishing will be necessary to remove any of these protestants.

In my opinion I wouldn't.

NO, just leave it be. That could just cause problems with the paint bonding down the road. The panel should be prepped/degreased/tack clothed before paint anyhow, but I'd advise against it. No need, the panel is protected with the primer.

I imagine that waxing a primer coat (especially if it will ever be painted) would be a very bad idea.

Introducing any wax our sealant would be bad at this time. The are called Last Step Protection and should be used as such..

As stated, primer is porous. It also absorbs moisture.. I would find a way to get some paint on it if it is going to be exposed to the elements.

Well, if you are going to have it on the vehicle and drive it around exposed, applying sealant or wax can't be that much worse!

My question would be why would you want to apply a wax to a primered panel? To make it shiny? Or protect? After driving around with the panel for awhile it will probably need to be sanded down through most of the primer anyways. Most body shops would re-primer the panel to get properly prepared for paint.
