Buckets for Grit guards

The blue Lowe's buckets do NOT work. The guards sit up off the bottom way too far. I need new buckets.

How far is too far? Isn't that the purpose of the bottom of the grit guard?

The blue ones at Walmart allows the guard to the bottom. The white ones at Walmart stop the guard about half way down.

When I got my grit guards and tried to put them in my green buckets from Menard's, I found that they were sitting maybe 4" too high. It sounds like this was the same size bucket as several others in this thread have found.

My solution: Stick your foot in there and step on that sucker until it sits on the bottom. I recommend doing this before filling it with soap and water, but it probably doesn't matter.

Now my grit guards are stuck in my buckets and don't fall out when I dump the buckets out. Why would I ever need to remove them anyway? If just stepping on it hadn't worked, I next would have reached for the heat gun. I think some of you may be over-thinking this.

Have you seen how much grit is floating around when the grit guard sits on the bottom of the bucket? Someone showed how much grit was floating in the water using a clear plastic bucket. It also showed when two grit guards was used..grit stayed on the bottom. Should the grit guard be made a little higher?

As Posted above the Lowes blue "Encore" fits perfect (I added a zip tie for a nice snug fit)

I have two Lowes blue buckets and my grit guards fit perfectly.

The blue Lowe's buckets that I have stop the grit guard a little more than half way down. They must have several different diameter blue buckets because mine do NOT look like those in the pictures.

I have regular orange HD buckets, and my grit guards go right to the bottom, is this incorrect?

Now I am questioning the science of grit guard figment lol

Stir it up and see where the grit goes. It will mix with your wash mitt. If the grit were rocks, they might stay on the bottom.

So the guard is supposed to stay at the top?
Mind=blown

I will say I bought Chemical Guys grit guards. Not sure if they are any different than the rest of them.

No, but it takes two GG to make it work.

Hi pitviper33...

-I tried the same thing but my number 12's wouldn't allow it.

-I asked "The Good Wife" if she would do it for me.

-She said" "Absolutely: No! I will not".
(She then suggested that I use my head to beat the GG down.)

Like your above results...I was then good to go :bolt:

Haha... I've been lurking. I didn't even realize that was actually my first post. I've been mostly absorbing info without enough know-how yet to offer much in return. Eventually you'll see tht change; I promise I'm good for more than stepping on things.

I finally got a couple of pickle buckets. They work with the grit guards. Here is a picture of a pickle bucket beside a Napa bucket. The Napa bucket does not work with a grit guard.

I purchased the white/ translucent ones from the Home Depot paint department. Like someone mentioned they are great because they have measurement lines on them and a nice foam handle and the grit guards fit perfect.

I ran across a guy selling 7 home depot buckets for $10 on craigslist. I didn't end up needing them and he never responded, but there are deals out there if you need cheap buckets.

I just use my old 5 gallon ice melt buckets. Guards float right to the bottom and stay there. If your guard is floating around on you can just weigh it down.
