Hey everyone, my little brother just got his first car. It's a 96' Camaro RS. It has some pretty bad clear coat failure in some places and some really bad oxidation in others. I think I can get the oxidation out with relative ease. However I did have a question, the front and rear bumper have absolutely no sheen to them. Is the clear coat gone or could it just be really badly oxidized? I did a test spot on the front bumper and I didn't have any paint transfer, so I would assume that there is clear coat on it, however the paint didn't really shine back up all that much. It got a little smoother but there just wasn't a shine to it like there is on the hood. I know the car should get re painted if he wants it to really look good. But for a first car, that's just not worth it. I'm just trying to help get my brothers car looking halfway decent. Thanks for any incite you guy can give.

Faded front bumpers are common on the 93-96 camaro's. The clear could be gone. What products are you using?

I've been using the microfiber cutting pads with the compound made for them. I also have some megs foam pads as well as lake country pads and I normally use those with megs m205 and m105. Normally I do some of the more heavy cutting with the microfiber cutting pads and then I switch to foam pads.

Any Urethane body parts have a flex agent added to the paint because the parts are rubbery.

In my life of detailing cars, I've always noticed the paint used on urethane parts fails faster, fades faster, cracks faster and dulls faster than any of the paint on the rest of the body panel on a car.

Hit these parts with your MF pads and the compound and wax and you should be able to get a little more shine out of them.

Remember, gloss and shine come from a smooth surface. If this car has been neglected chances are very good that the paint on all of the car is no longer smooth.

Claying will increase smoothness and this will increase shine.

Machine polishing will maximize smoothness and this will increase shine.

Gloss starts first with a smooth surface...
