I am thinking of setting up a part time business and for my domain name i can get either (name)detail.com or (name)detailing.com. What do you guys think? detail or detailing?

Depends on what the name part is. AttentiontoDetail or MrHorsepowersDetailing.
What sounds better when you put it all together?

I am using the name of my town so it's (town)detail.com or (town)detailing.com. Thoughts?

It could go either way in that sense, Unless the town you live in has a strange name and one suits it better than the other. Say it out loud a few times and hear how it sounds. All an all its a personal choice for you which sounds better.

Ultimately....shorter is better. Go with detail. If you're concerned about competition, buy 'detailing' as well and forward it to 'detail.'

Total FWIW, but I'd recommend considering the town name with caution. Are you set to live and work there forever? Is there something better that conveys your vision and marketing plan? (Are you emphasizing quality and expertise, or are you after high volume? Do you want to attract clientele from outside of your town?) Good luck...

Thanks! I actually did buy both. I live in a small town and I'm just looking to service the local community with "production" type detailing. I have no intentions to move and if I did I would basically be starting over anyway and I might be able to sell this business to someone else. I want it to be search engine friendly and easy to remember. I also think shorter is better but most of the sites I see here seem to be "detailing" so I was just curious.

I prefer detailing. It just represents itself more as "auto detailing" in people's minds.

As a software engineer that does primarily web work I would suggest buying both domains and having them both point to whatever your actual business name is on your business license...
