So I started my detailing business about a year ago. Since then, I have had two people try to pull one over on my but the whole situation confuses me. I am wondering if anyone has had the same thing happen to them and what their goal is here (scammer).

I got a text about a month ago from a foreign guy telling me that he wanted me to detail his box truck and Ford f250. He wanted "the works" and wanted to pay in advance. He also said that he had moved from NJ to IN and was wanting to have the vehicles towed to my shop. I got photos from him and they were clearly off a Craigslist ad or something. I told him to get lost when he couldn't tell me who referred him.

I got an e-mail today from someone else, asking for the exact same thing. They were also wanting to get their two vehicles towed to my shop and wanted "the works".

What is going on here?
 
Just say no! If your gut is telling you not to do it don't. What the scam is that they want to pay up front 1st. Then they ask if they can pay more so you can give them the difference for the top price. You give them the difference and then wait for them to show up. Problem is if it is foreign money or out of the country the US does not prosecute.

Henceforth the scam. Happens alot on Amazon or Ebay...that is why there is so much security measures for them.

I wanted to rent a room from my house and got a similar situation. They wanted to pay me triple rent but wanted to get back a difference if they gave me more than triple. This was about 8 years ago. Now if it stinks it is....just e-mail them back and let them know they are scams. They will let all the other scammers know you've caught on.
 
I get these e-mails/texts regularly. I just ignore them. It's just phishing all auto detailing businesses they can find numbers or e-mails for.

Sorry but if you have to ask the price I believe you cannot afford my services.
 
I have received a couple as well. I promptly ignored the first one after it felt just plain weird. The second one surprised me to the point of trying to figure out what the mechanics of their scam was. I never got to figure it out because i promptly ignored the second one too!

Don't fall for any of this BS.
 
Just reply: I only take cash in advance. Who knows, maybe you'll get an envelope with a bunch of $$$.
 
Got one last week: Escalades, deaf person,
credit card relay service...an AIO!

I thought it was a possible ADA scam.
Is it technically illegal to hang up on a
hearing impaired call?

I got a text today from a guy with a NY area code telling me his name, asking if I did auto repair, what type of CC I accepted and what my full name was. He also said he was got my info "on-site", whatever that means. How did you manage to get my number when my full name is always listed along with my contact information? I just told him he had the wrong number.

I got the same ad, too. What a rip. Here's the latest I got from "Juliet":

Am okay with the price and i need little favor from you? the favor is that I have not pay the Tow Driver that will bring the Vehicles to your shop and I can't do that my self bcos I am presently receiving my hearing treatment at the hospital and am going to have surgery soon,

i will like you to do me a favor due to my physical disability... the Tow driver don't have access to credit card facilities as for now so I will like you to run my card to charge for $2,500 and you keep $1000 as deposit...

and $100 for your tip for the errand have the remaining send the Tow agent as they receive payment upfront via Money Gram, OR Deposit to their Bank Account so they can have the vehicle Drive down to your shop and wait for pickup.

i used to mess with those people. but i gave up because some were so dumb they never caught on to my trolling.

LOL I got the exact same one. They must be crazy to try this.
 
It happens on Care.com also, where I made a profile. Stuff sounded fishy, but the style is the same. It goes along these lines.
I'm far away and plan to move there.
I have a ton of money, and will need some supplies/service.
I'll send you a check for your pay, plus extra.
Deposit the check, and send me the remaining for the supplies/service.

Along those lines.
You go to the bank, you have 2000 dollars of your own money in the account.
You cash the check for 1500 dollars, you now have 3500 dollars, you send him 1000.
Your account now has 2500 dollars.
The check bounces a few days later for 1500 dollars.
Your account now has 1000 dollars.
You just got ripped on for 1000 dollars.
 
i've gotten these on more then 1 occasion and the best thing i can think of is to just leave them be. You can normally spot if they are a scam by their English and how they refer to certain things. Just write back scam and watch them disappear LoL
