Buy a ipa or make it?

Straight ?
And I use a mist bottle like hair dressers use for good even coverage.

I use these for all my liquid products.

thanks....added to the tank at the long river place.....

MP has been making his own for years
If its good enough for him, its good enough for me

This is interesting, I was just trying to find an MSDS for Carpro Eraser to see what the majority of the mix was

I picked that brand at random, but was unable to find an MSDS on line

What I did find was that their website talked about how it's an excellent glass cleaner as well as a few other miscellaneous tasks BESIDES paint prep

What I find interesting is I have seen Mike Phillips use Sonax Glass Cleaner as a final paint wipe prior to applying a sealant or coating for several product reviews (303 Graphene among others)

The first time I read it I thought it was a typo but I have seen him use it more than once

You have to wonder what makes a spray bottle of "paint prep" worth sooooo much more money than an equivalent size bottle of glass cleaner if they are interchangeable

I mix isopropyl and distilled water to Brian of Apex's formula which varies depending on the strength % of the base alcohol

I have not found the need for added color or cool smells to prep a panel for an LSP

If there was a local source of a panel spray that wasn't $25 a pint I might do a comparison but there isn't so I will be dumb and happy and keep using my homemade IPA mix

Maybe I should add a drop of food coloring and really be posh...

I haven’t seen the actual MSDS for Eraser myself, but over on Detailing World (UK detailing forum), someone posted the following:

2-2. Chemical description Chemical formula Content CAS No. Remark
Isopropyl Alcohol < 30% 67-63-0
Dionized water > 60% 7732-18-5
Sodium lauryl ether sulfate 1%-3% 685-34-2
odor additive 1% proprietary

So at most 30% IPA, plus SLES as a surfactant, to help dissolve and emulsify as well as add lubrication. Based on this, I mixed up my own “homebrew” panel prep wipe, which I plan to test and use for cleaning up after polishing steps and when applying a wax or sealant. I’d still use the more expensive branded options if I were to apply a coating, but otherwise I think the homebrew will work well enough in most cases.

I'm a simple person, so rather than playing mad chemist with IPA or other chemicals, I simply buy a bottle of Eraser or Prep. Both have served me well many times over the years.

If you can make chocolate milk you can make your own IPA.....2 ingredients

The cost difference is fairly significant. I’m not in the US, so prices will obviously differ, but over here 500ml (17 oz) of Carpro Eraser is around $20 (larger sizes are not available here). I can get a gallon of 70% IPA for $3.30, 2.5 gallons of distilled for $3.00, and 9oz of SLES for $0.80. That gives me 3.5 gallons of homebrew panel wipe for $7.10, or $2.03 per gallon, while Eraser would cost me over $151 per gallon - that’s 75 times as much.

Can anyone give me an idea of what to look into for panel wipes?

I have never heard of doing this step and was curious about it.

do you want to save money or have it be a no brainer?

Either or. I pickup rubbing alcohol weekly for cleaning but I do like a no brainer…

Guessing it’s part of the process to clean up and let the wax or sealant adhere better

Ya panel wipe is as simple as a 50/50 mix of IPA and distilled water.....store bought has some other ingredients (inert)...good luck determining what those are...

Also windex at a 50/50 mix with distilled water is another method.

I have only used CMX panel wipe as a store bought and it takes way too long to flash...simple is simple I guess...

I picked up a gallon of Optimum Paint Prep. It is excellent for removing residue and deposits on the inside of car windows too.

I'm still on the fence though have been using the IPA+SLES mix as it is much more economical. I wonder if SLES (or APC) leaves behind some residue.
Thus far I have used it as PW for sealants, but as I prepare to do my first coating, I am wondering whether I just factor in the price of a commercial PW as part of the cost of coating - if only to provide great assurance that the paint wont inadvertently be scratched, and no residues will be left behind.
