Buying the Flex or the PC?

I have done a lot of reading through the flex forums, including some pretty passionate debates between the GG vs Flex. After a lot of consideration the flex is going on my Christmas list, I hope I have been good. It will be a good upgrade from my PC classic.

....congrats. I finally pulled the trigger on a Flex I got from AG as well about 3 months ago. I agree with BigAl though that it is useful having both kinds of polishers on hand (due to pad size limitations). I still have my PC with a load of 4" pads that I have no intention of getting rid of. I can still find a use for it in those tight areas (i.e. bumpers, a/b/c pillars, etc.).

I bought a GG DA and have only used it one time and now I am wanting the FLEX. So I say good choice in purchasing the FLEX. It certainly does take longer with a DA.

Isn't there a mod you can do to fit 5.5" pads on the FLEX? I thought I read it somewhere.

Sure, just toss a 5.5" pad on it and be very careful ;) There used to be the edge adapter but they are no longer making it.

I am relatively new to machine detailing. I first purchased the PC, did 2 vehicles and ordered the flex. I am very happy with both. I still use the PC for tight places with smaller pads and it is invaluable for that task. I'd recommend you start with the PC and see where it takes you.

Get both it will save you a lot of time doing panel by panel two stage polishing.. :xyxthumbs:

I have both the PC and the Flex now. When I first started, the PC was a great tool. After about a year, I kept reading (and wanting) the Flex because of its quick correction time and lack of "jiggling". I asked for it for my birthday and the wife suprised me :)

The Flex 3401 is my first da, and I act like pro. These forums show me I still have allot off learning to do, but i'm comfortable with it.I bought the pinnacle swirl remover kit so im learning. Ive polished three cars including my own and all my friends are bugging me to polish theirs. Dont but something twice, get the Flex you wont regret it....

I learned on a PC, .......now it's time for a Flex. The PC just doesn't have the power I need. Starting out, yeah it's good for going slow until you know what you're doing.

But now, I do so many vehicles, speed is important to me.

congrats..I had my PC for 2years and I just bought a flex last week. Its an AWESOME machine. it took me about half of my hood of my car before I felt comfortable. It almost makes you hold it properly cause if the pad isnt flat the flex will try and run away on you. I wish it wasnt winter cause I want to do another car..I dont even care if anyone pays me I just want to use it again..haha
Although I do like having my PC as well to put down glazes and i can get the small 4" pads for small areas..I think its best to have both in your tool kit

Both the Flex 3401 and a Porter Cable 7424 or like DA polisher all work function in a similar manor. The Flex unlike its competition has a forced rotation feature and more powerful motor sets it apart from all the rest. There is no reason to spend hard earned cash on one of the others if your ultimate goal is to "upgrade" to the Flex in the first place.

Buy it once, buy it now..............:props:

i personally think the pc does an adequate job, but it seems to bog down when using only slight pressure, hence it takes longer. so im planning to go with the flex after doing our 3 cars.

This will be my first polisher as well. I read as much as I could about the PC and the Flex. I decided to go with the Flex. I have a hard clear coated Corvette. I took the advice of others here and ordered the pads that they recommended. I'm going with Meg's 105/205 to get things nice again. I took advantage of the holiday sale here at Autogeek. The Flex is on the way and I can't wait to get started. :props:

I was reluctant on pulling the trigger on a PC let alone the flex. Hmm I guess I'll get the PC for now hone my skills and polish friends cars here and there then eventually work my way up and purchase the flex as well. Anyword on OP or is he still detailing car lol

I would only get a rotary only if you know what your doing. I was using a Dewalt on my cousin older car and I peeled some paint on his bumper. I would get a DA if your new to the buffing, its very safe and almost idiot proof. I used my Griot yesterday and did a couple test spots using 205 and it removed all the swirls and bird etching. DA are amazing may take couple more pass but a lot safer. Good luck with your buy.:buffing:
