Picked this product up to replace the hard to find L1 by G Techniq before AG started carrying L1 just recently

uzy9utej.jpg

CarPro claims it can be used on leather and fabric (obviously), it provides the "ultimate UV protection", it has a "super hydrophobic effect", and it's "stain resistant".

Oddly enough, G Techniq pretty much makes the same claims regarding L1

epesymum.jpg

I'm pretty familiar with L1. I've been using it on the seats of my BMW since last summer. It seems to protect fairly well. The application of L1 is very easy. The tell you to just spray it on the leather and remove excess with a paper cloth. I've found, it works better if you spray it and QUICKLY spread it with a foam applicator, as you get much more even coverage that way.

The thing I noticed about L1 is how quickly it dries. I mean, you have to spread it fast because it starts to dry immediately. G Tech says L1 is dry and ready to use in 5 minutes. I pretty much agree with that. L1 gives a look that is matte and just like a clean seat with nothing on it.

Right after L1 is applied to the seat, getting in and out of the car is like luxury. It's like that "slick" feeling when you just apply a sealant. Not too slick, but your butt just moves across the seat with no friction, or so it feels. However, that new feeling doesn't last too long. Maybe for the first week or so after you apply the product. The product is still protecting the seat, as G T recommends reapplication every 4 months on "heavily used surfaces, like your driver's seat".

This comparison is solely on leather. First, I cleaned the seat well using Leather Master's Soft Cleaner & Sonus All In 1 Surface Cleaner to make sure all the L1 was gone. Then I wiped the seat down with a clean towel and distilled water. The directions on the CarPro product tell you just to spray it on the surface. I quickly realized that was not going to work well. The product needed to be spread out quite a bit.

Unlike L1, that dries super fast, F & L dries VERY slow. The temperature in the garage today is 62 degrees. When applying F & L a little goes a very long way on leather. The product goes much farther than L1. It seemed as though I had to use a LOT more L1 than F & L to cover the same seat previously. On leather at least, the 100 ml bottle of F & L should last quite a while, as very little product is required to cover the seat.

F & L spreads like there may be some sort of slow drying solvent in it. I say that because the dry time was taking such a while. CarPro mentions in the directions to let it dry in the sun or to use a heat gun. There is no sun here today, so I got out the heat gun. I went over the whole seat for about 10 minutes with a 1500 watt heat gun. While doing this, I noticed the drying product began to give off an odor that was a cross between mineral spirits and kerosene.

Even now, over an hour later, I'm not 100% sure the seat is totally dry. The seat seems dry to the touch, so why do I say this? Well, because the F & L has give the seat a very glossy finish. Almost like a "wet" or "dressed" finish. However, when I run my hand across the seat it feels dry. Maybe its not totally dry in the seams, but the flat surface is dry. It almost looks like I dressed the seat with a tire dressing, fairly glossy. This is in contrast to L1, which leaves more of a flat look like UIG+.

So, here are some pictures so I can show you what mean.

Seat about an hour after application of F & L . Dried seat about 10 minutes with a 1500 watt heat gun.

As a comparison, here is the passenger seat that was treated about a month ago with L1. While it's not a current application, rarely does anyone sit in this seat, and the look now pretty much describes L1 shortly after application.

Hopefully here you can see a comparison between the two seats:

So, I think the only way I can accurately give information on the product is to keep updating this thread. I may wait several hours to see if the difference is so dramatic, or maybe I will wait until tomorrow. One thing, I don't see how you could use F & L in a hurry, as it seems to take a while to dry. I used the product very sparingly, maybe 5 or 6 sprays spread out over the whole seat.

As of now, I don't think I'm too crazy about the look. It looks too glossy for my tastes. However, I'm not sure how long that will last. I should have more of an idea tomorrow.

An update will follow.

Looking forward to your update.

To me the L1 appears to have a much more matte finish

although I guess the F & L may need more time to dry as well as a day or so to notice any significant changes and reduction in gloss

because that F & L looks far to glossy for my taste

but again time will tell

look forward to your update

and thanks for the Review

I like the look of the L1 better but the whole heat gun thing kinda turns me off. I am using Leather Masters's Protection Cream now. I noticed you used the Soft Cleaner. Have you used the PC and how does it compare with these two?

Dont want to be contrary, but I seem to remember L1 doesnt have UV inhibitors, Rob, please feel free to correct me. I remember because it really surprised me when he stated that. Really excellent review. I use F&L on my ragtop and love it.

So, I made a short IPhone video showing how this stuff reacts with water:

http://youtu.be/1TLzSBSfFhY

Now that it's several hours later I'm sure this stuff is dry. While the glossy look toned down a bit, it is still quite glossy looking. However, in person it is not a bad look. It's evened out. The product leaves no streaks, tracers, or wipe marks where you spread it out. Matte it ain't. Now I'm liking the look much better. I'll attempt it, but the change may not be evident in these pictures:

The light from the flashlight is probably contributing to some of the reflectiveness.

So far, there are a couple of major difference between L1 & CarPro Fabric and Leather. They are:

1. Matte vrs gloss look. The CarPro Fabric and Leather just seems more like there is an actual product on the seat, like a more substantial protectant. However, L1 leaves a very "new" clean look. You can feel it more than you can see it.

2. CarPro Fabric and Leather has none of the "smooth" feel left behind that L1 has. While the seat is not grabby, it doesn't have the "zero friction" feeling L1 has. However, keep in mind, the feeling is short lived. Maybe a week or so max, then it quickly diminishes.

3. The dry time for CarPro Fabric and Leather can be measured in hours, where L1 can be measured in minutes. L1 actually almost "disappears" into the leather like a WOWA sealant (sort of, but you get the idea).

4. The amount required of CarPro Fabric and Leather to cover a seat is MUCH less than L1. Interestingly, both products come in small entry level size 100 ml bottles. While the initial cost of L1 is much less ($10), all things being equal, I think CarPro Fabric and Leather may actually be the better deal (~ $25 ?). As I would guess I used about 1/5 of the liquid volume of F & L (compared to L1) to cover the same seat. For leather use, I can see this bottle of CarPro Fabric and Leather lasting me a LONG time. Due to it's "solvent" style spreading feel, you can probably cover a whole seat with 5 sprays spread out on the leather. L1 does not really spread very far. You have to keep spraying, as it dries or "flashes" very quickly.

Some of my favorite things right now:

I will update in a few days after I drive the car a bit.

Good info Swanic, you gave me some guidelines & things to consider when I review Mother's LT.

Another great post swanicyouth! BTW, I grew up in Doylestown!

Awesome! Years ago I was in Doylestown quite a lot.

So, due to the drastic difference in sheen (and nothing on TV) I decided to strip the L1 off the passenger seat and coat it with Fabric and Leather. I used the same cleaners, Sonus All in 1 & Leather Master's Soft Touch Cleaner. Seat was again wiped down with distilled water after clean.

Right away I could tell the L1 was still working well, as it took a little agitation of the cleaners on the surface to "break" the coating, at first they just wanted to sit on top.

For those who haven't tried Sonus All in 1, its a great surface cleaner. It dilutes very high (up to 1:40) and is safe on any surface, including paint & leather. It also works well as an agent to strip wax at 1:30. Coincidently, this is the dilution recommended to clean leather. Another great thing about it is it comes with an extra spray bottle, to use for your diluted product. I bought it on BOGO and keep it mixed 1:30 & 1:10.

Here you can see my 2 products bottles and spray bottles:

Sonus even goes as far to label to 2 supplied bottles differently for their intended purpose:

I like that they actually tell you what dilution is recommended for what surface:

Anyway, back on topic. Here is the seat completely clean, so you can compare before and after.

Then, kind of working backwards, I made a short video showing how the leather reacts to water without any coating on it to compare to the previous one:

http://youtu.be/ULenzcR6ULM

It's easy to see if you compare to the previous video how the treated seat repels and beads water much better. Hopefully, it works the same for dirt. The good thing is, now I have a benchmark to know if the coating is holding up and just how long its "repellant" properties remain effective.

One thing I would like to revise about my original post is the amount of sprays it took to cover the seat. I said it took about 5. I was actually way off, it took more like 12. It still takes MUCH less product to cover the seat than L1. I'm guess L1 maybe took about 30 sprays, as the bottles seem to dispense a somewhat similar volume.

Now that I was familiar with the product, and how far it goes, I was able to spread it a little thinner from the beginning. It does seem to be drying a bit faster this time. As, I may have over applied it (being used to L1) on my first application.

This is what the seat looked like 5 minutes after applying:

Over all, so far I am very happy with CarPro's C.Quartz Fabric and Leather for leather applications. Convincing me to use it on my fabric convertible top is a bit tough though, just because I can find no fault with the 303's High Tech Fabric Guard I've been using for years.

So, I will update this thread from time to time on how the product is holding up, using how well it repels water as an indicator.

Some things I like about the product so far:

1. Application is very easy

2. It doesn't leave application streak marks like similar products can

3. It repeals water like crazy. Hopefully, this will make the seats easy to clean with a towel and some water. And, now that they are already treated, reapplication from time to time should be super easy and quick after a fast water wipe down. I also like that I'm able to use this as a benchmark to see how the product is holding up and when reapplication is necessary.

4. While the look may not be for everyone, it does add a shine to the surface its applied to giving it a dressed look. I'm guessing this will calm down in the next few days, how much will remain to be seen. But sometimes it is nice when you can see a visible before and after difference.

5. It takes very little product to coat an area. This makes the product a pretty good value.

6. The product claims very good UV protection. My experience with most CarPro stuff leads me to believe this is true. UV protection is very important on seats in a convertible, as driving with the top down exposes the leather directly to the sun.

Updates will follow from time to time.

oops, I mean F&L that I like better with the more matte look.

Very nicely done bud! Great pics and documentation! And well balanced

On leather the tips i have listed on our site go as follows.

1.-Shake
2.-Spray a couple times and spread with 4" mf suede but don't try to spread too thin.
Spray a couple times on the next section and again spread.
3.-Wait about a minute or two and using the back side of that same suede or a new one lightly wipe to achieve even finish.

I noticed you mentioned about spreading it so you may have partially done something similar but the look you have is much glossier than my experiences. In any case you have a thick coat for sure. :)

As you noted whatever heat you can provide is helpful to cure the coat best. A blow dryer or even leaving the heater on with windows help will help. Here in Florida we can park in the sun and hit 130F pretty quick.

I tested on Skybaby when we first released F&L and ill grab a picture from that momentarily. Let me find it :)

Btw, thanks for your time invested in writing your experiences!!
Corey

You'll be very excited with the results Mike ;) We've had a lot of great feedback with customers using it on all manner of shoes, golf bags, all kinds of things. Some great videos out there.

Corey,
I did put it on a bit "heavy" on the drivers seat. I was expecting it to act like L1 which requires many sprays / a lot of product to cover the seat. The passenger seat I used a little less, and it wasn't as glossy. However, the "gloss" isn't a bad thing or look. It makes the seat look pretty nice. It's also pretty cool you can control the gloss level by how much product you use, as I notice with some other products (L1 /UIG+) its sometimes hard to tell anything is on the surface once it's dry. The "look" is still holding up, but I haven't been able to drive the car yet due to snow.

Another thing I noticed was on one of the product's web pages it recommends buffing the finish after it sits for a minute or two, the bottle directions didn't say that, so I sort of used it like a WOWA sealant and just let it dry.

Either way, I'm just happy to find a product that leaves a nice looking surface, goes a long way, provides UV, mechanical, & water protection, and is super easy to use. In fact, its easier to use than a regular leather "conditioner" - as it just spreads out on the seat.

At first it seems a bit costly to buy a 100ml bottle for $22, however, when you realize how little product is required to coat a seat, I can see that little bottle lasting me a year or more.

Hey bud! Ya, I don't recommend people trying to wipe it thin but simply spread it and still keep it thick.

The part where I mention lightly wiping with the back of the suede a minute later... Perhaps it is this that lowers the gloss level. Anywho, I agree nice to be able to choose a gloss level. Perhaps ill try the no wipe method and see what I think ;)

Very interesting product, thanks for the review Swanic. Does anyone know if this stuff works on nubuck, suede or alcantara? It might work perfectly with my seats and some of my trim.

I have not tested it on those surfaces.

A few guys have used it on their suede shoes and reported success.

Alcantara I don't know of anyone who has used it.

Nubuck I know of one use but haven't heard back from him yet.

Thanks for the info! So I know you mentioned UIG+ earlier. How would you compare both the L1 and F&L to it?
