There was a bs e-mail going around about California traffic vioations rates going up starting July 1, 2007. According to that e-mail driving solo in a carpool lane can result in a fine of almost $1,100 for the first offence. Then it doubles, triples, and 4th offence will resulft driver's licence suspension.
There were many other incerases, but this one really captured my mind, as this is my worst offence...:p
I tried to research it on the web, but did not find anything about it from officials, as I don't want to hear it from people that want to make it happen.

Anybody heard anything about it?

Can't help you with yours but over here across the country(VA) we had the same thing..."Civil Fees" is what they are calling them. An additional fines(spread over three years) on top of the ticket you get...for example failure to use proper signals is three payments of $350 total amount $1050 on top of the ticket and court cost for forgeting a turn signal, Thats just stupid. Sound like they found another way to rip us off. The thing I hate most about them they are only in effect for VA residents...F that get the tourist. Sorry for the rant.

Sometimes the tourist is a fellow AG-er!!!
Although I saw the fines too. Ouch! But I think the ones for DUI's are a good thing!!

Supercharged- I have a friend whose husband is a San Diego Sherrif. I will ask her/him and let you know - he will know. I am still gone in Hawaii now though. (2 1/2 weeks - yee haw!)

It is alright my bro lives in SC so I will have my mail sent there and become a SC resident but live in VA. Don't get me wrong i'm a good driver...but everyone forget a turn signal every now and again and to have to pay $1050 or lose your licence(and they pay some more to get it back) is ridiculous.

carpool is not a serious violation leading to accidents, therefore it should not be treated as one. In that case running on a red light should be double of that.

Anyway, not sure how it is in your area, but here, in Sacramento there are a lot of let's just say non-American born fellows, that rode horses and donkeys before, therefore when they get behind a wheel on a car they are driving so slow. City and especially freeway. Perphaps they need to ride as a pasanger in one of those speed test cars in the Nuburgring...

Running red lights sometimes can be unintentional, when you are in the carpool lane w less than the indicated number of passengers.... its on purpose.

Coming from the State of road rage, theres very little more that pisses me off than me waiting in rush hour traffic and seeing cars w one driver in the car pool lane.
