Can a newbie realistically apply Opti-coat?

Those Jim posted are perfect. If you don't want to order online, check your local walmart in the travel sized toiletries. I do reuse mine...I just pump warm water through them, take off the pickup tube, take off the atomizer, and let them air dry before reassembly.

I applied 2.0 for the first time today. Overall it went smooth. I did have a few dime size "high spots" that I noticed when I pulled it in the sun. I used some PO85RD and knocked them down easily by hand.

I did a halfway detailed write up and posted some pics here.

Very well done! I think you will be happier with an MF applicator or better yet two. I did OC once with the foam pad myself. It was my first and last time too!

Thanks Chris!! After I saw your most excellent video, I went this way and havent looked back! Please post a link to it if you get a chance!

I will probably go over the car with po85rd to remove the light marring and re do it.

Looks pretty damn good as is! Wait until you see how easy it is to clean and you wont ever go back to a sealant.

I have OC on the way. I also ordered the applicator combo pack which comes with both the yellow foam applicators and these Cobra Microfiber Applicator Pads spread car care products evenly & neatly. Cobra microfiber is nonabrasive and safe on clear coat finishes. microfiber ones.

I assume these are what you are talking about Jim?

I have used the foam that came with opti-coat, those little yellow foamies that come in the mega microfiber kit and have been very happy with both. I drop them in a solution of dawn dish soap after using them until I have a chance to clean them.

I haven't tried a MF applicator for anything but interior cleaner or AIO because I have had no reason, but I would assume they are going to absorb more opti-coat then the small foam pads would.

Another option that has worked well for me and not caused any noticeable issues with opti-coat is to lightly wipe the panel down with a mf towel about 2-3 minutes after apply the Opti-coat to the panel. 1 car, 2 harleys, and some odds and end pieces (clear coat and single stage paint) and with a follow up wipe, I have never found a high spot after the fact.

It doesnt absorb as much as you think, Chris used an MF pad in a video and I prefer it to the foam pad, The foam is a bit grabby to me. Different strokes.

What are the effects of IPA wipe down on opticoat?

I will probably have a few more spots that I need to level down with PO85RD. After I do that do I need to do an IPA wipe down in the small areas before applying more opticoat? What does the IPA do the the existing opticoat?

It will just brush IPA off. Look at the chemicals used by Corey (CEEDOG) in his Opticoat/Cquartz Review http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum...ew-extreme-testing-opti-coat-2-0-cquartz.html

Well good news is that I very lightly rubbed a few of these spots with PO85RD by hand on the corner of a microfiber and it got rid of them. I only have to rub for about 10 seconds.

I still have to pull it outside and inspect everything real closely. I will do that when the kids nap.

IDK why everyone posts that you have to be super aggressive to remove stains. Seemed very simple to me.

Stains - are you talking about the rainbow looking high spots in an opti-coat application? If so, if you just recently applied opti-coat, less then two days, it is still rather fresh and easy to correct. I think poli-seal is the normal recommendation from Optimum to remove such things and compared to most products, has very little cut.

Later sometime around 30 days the opti-coat will have fully hardened and removing such defects wouldn't be as easy, but still not terribly difficult.

You can also use Optimum Polishes.

Never meant to imply you couldn't use optimum polishes or probably any number of other polishes, just that normally I see poli-seal recommended.
Poli-seal having very little cut and being able to remove high spots prior to complete curing is similar to the results that slammin had, that removing the defects are quite easy and not a reason for concern.
