Can I save this hood? opinion...

Situations like this are easy to answer, are you willing to pay out of your pocket to respray the damaged paint if you burn it? I don't think so. Polishing all boils down to your personal skill level, don't attempt things you have never done before because you will be setting yourself up for an expensive repair.
