Can I use my DA to sand?

The only issue I could see with sanding is where the loose material goes, sanders usually have holes so all of the dust goes into a collection place

You might have trouble finding sanding disks with rough enough sandpaper to fit a DA's backplate. A few years back I wanted to do just that and could not find any. I ended up purchasing an Angle Grinder for 30$ that came with sanding disks. That thing will go to metal in about 3 seconds. So my suggesting is to do just that if you plan to paint.

Can't agree with that. I sanded down flaking paint on an entire exterior wall of my house and have boxes of velcro-backed sandpaper tray in grits from 60 to 240, using my Dewalt orbital sander. Same kind of backing plate as my GG polisher.

Might be a local market thing. Here in Montreal, all the sand paper disks I could find were 6 inches and with a sticky (glue) backing for flat sanders. My DAs all had 5 inch Look and Hoop backplates. I went to a bodyshop supplier and he told me that in the 40 to 120 grit papers that is all he could get and they came in boxes of 100. So the angle grinder was quite a deal. I think the box of 100 disk was about 200$ or something similar. The disks that come with the angle grinder are made of a sort of ceramic material I think, and they last a long time. I have sanded a few things with it and I am still on my first disk and it looks almost new. Also, when you attach a wirebrush cup to the grinder, it can remove heavy rust on metal items very easilly.

So even if you can find rough sandpaper in the 40 to 80 range for a DA, I still think that the angle grinder is much more suited for the job of stripping to metal.
