can this be saved or is it a lost cause

So as it says in the title... DO you guys think this paint could be saved? The car is a 1986 Camaro I believe it has a single stage paint but I am not sure. I read online that you can do a 1500 wet sand to a 3000 grit to a M101 with a microfiber cutting disk and then follow it up with a M201 and a polish. I have also saw where Mike used M7 and did 2 or 3 coats of that and just let it sit on the car for a while to let the oils transfer. What do you guys think?

I'd give it a shot. I might try Ultimate Compound first though. My usual start is Ultimate Compound on a green Buff and Shine pad. I might try to avoid sanding though.
 
That doesn't look too bad, what dlc95 suggested sounds good. Won't do anything for that hole in the front bumper, and I'd wait for the snow to melt before working on it ;)
 
From my limited experience, red paint fades/oxidizes really fast. It probably isn't as bad as it looks and it doesn't really look that bad to begin with, just in need of a little love. Start with something mild and see what it does, you can always get more aggressive.

BTW, Is an 86 really an antique? My dad has an 89 Iroc Z28 in the garage.

Yeah, maybe start with Ultimate Polish, rather than Ultimate Compound (if we're talking OTC). It certainly doesn't need to be wetsanded (except that bumper hole).

Seems like most states 25 years is the cutoff. With cars lasting longer and longer, they may have to change that at some point.
 
Before I'd start any type of abrasive
polishing on this vehicle:
-I'd first find out if the paint is SS.

If it is, then (again before any abrasive
polishing would take place):
-I'd gorge the paint with a couple of rounds of
Meguiar's M07---part of the: "Mike Phillips
SS-Paint System Reconditioning Method"...
that you referenced in your OP.

^ Agreed

I'd start by using a white wax applicator pad and some Megs Ultimate Polish.

If you pad turns red then it's SS.

If you're still not sure then I might suggest using HD Adapt compound/polish.
