Do you what's been done in the past? I would start with a tune up for sure

Depends on engine. 2.0 4 cylinder or 1.8T? This is the best forum for this answer:
VWVortex.com

I`m active on it as well.

2.0 Non turbo and had timing belt 100k ago and eater pump and coils had clutch and flywheel 2 yr ago

Suspension will have to be replaced, shocks only last 75,000 and none of the components have most likely been changed. Many people neglect their suspension as it is easy to not fix worn parts there.

If you really want to know exactly what needs to be done to it take it to an auto shop and ask them to perform a PPI (Pre Purchase Inspection) for you.

As an ASE Certified automotive tech, your on borrowed time with that timing belt. Get it done first. A good shop is going to ask if you want to do the water pump as well, and you might as well since the tech is RIGHT THERE. Also, timing belt idler and tensioner pulleys need to be replaced with those miles.

Your struts are most likely trashed. Wen you do the front struts, make sure you do the strut mount as well. The rear are not that important, but the front have to move with every turn of the steering wheel, and wear out over time.

Since you got a 5 speed, get the manual trans fluid changed out. Make man sure they use the right fluid.

Your going to find that parts are going to be a little more expensive for your VW. And god help you when the engine light comes on...not a lot of repair places work on European vehicles. The scanners are expensive, the software is expensive, the tools to fix them are expensive, and that cost gets passed on down to you, when we get a Euro aE, we refer them to a euro car specialist.

But hey...you got the car of your dreams !!

Well i am wanting to drop a 1.8 t engine in the car so I'm wondering if i should even replace the timing belt if I'm only gonna drive it 10,000 miles or so

A word of advice, the 1.8t was known to sludge on older volkswagens. Even with proper work on the car. I would get it checked out before running the chance of an engine having problems
