Car repainted and turned matte overtime

My cousins 2008 black G37 (non scratch resist paint) had a couple panels repainted a few months back. It was nice and shiny after repainting, but over a few months it's slowly turning into a matte finish. What could cause this? Body shop said the new "water based paints" can absorb some of the clear coat? And said its more common on darker colors?

So what could cause a repainted panel to have a matte finish overtime?

Paint that's not taken care of and exposed to the outdoors can and will become dull but not like you describe.

I would do a simple test and see if using a fine polish restores clarity and gloss.

If it doesn't that's a pretty good indicator there's really something wrong with the paint itself.

Do you have a machine, foam pads and any polishes?

Sounds like die-back.... which since you said the basecoat was waterborne, likely means it hadn't fully cured prior to application of the clear (the painter was in a hurry and/or was inexperienced with waterborne and didn't know any better).

I would do as Mike suggests and try to see how it reacts to polishing, but most likely the shop will have to re-work the affected panels.

Yeah shop agreed to redo it. I do have a PC, but he lives pretty far. I was just curious if the shop was being honest about darker cars and water base paint absorbing the clear coat, seems weird IMO. First time seeing that happen.

The problem, or potential problem is that if it happened the first time it might happen again? Same painter, same paint booth, same paint system, same technique...

I do have a PC,

If the painter did good prep work and did a good job of spraying the paint, AND if all it takes is a little polishing to restore a clear, glossy finish, that's the option I would go with and avoid having the same panel repainted yet again.

If the paint won't polish to a clear high gloss then "yes", by all means let the painter take another stab at it.

Maybe he used single stage paint?? Who knows...that's what sucks about going to a body shop. They never seem to want to be honest!
