I entered my 2012 45th Anniversary Camaro SS Convertible in a car show this weekend. big deal you say...
I parked the car and paid my fee. Took out my detailing supplies and started wiping down the car with some spray wax. A few minutes later, a beautiful 2014 Corvette Stingray pulls in and parks next to me. The color was a dark gray.
An older gentlemen gets out of the car, we exchange pleasantries before he goes and pays his fee.
He comes back and I say to him "nice car, its really sharp". He says thanks, opens the trunk and pulls out a bottle of Windex and an old ratty t-shirt. I thought he was going to clean the windows...wrong!
He begins to spray the Windex on this vette and starts rubbing it in, back and forth with this t-shirt. I'm looking on in amazement and I am totally bewildered.
I mention to him that he should invest in some spray wax, as that might be better for the finish on his beautiful car.
"Son", he says, "I have been using Windex for years and it has always done a good job. I dont even have to wax my car, I just use this" as he points to the bottle.
I knew right then there was no point to further discuss with this man car care techniques.
I was totally blown away about his ignorance. The car looked terrible, streaks everywhere and very fine swirls and scratches.
By the way, my car was voted as one of the top 5 favorites for '83 and newer cars.
Unbelievable...

Trying to think of something to reply with, but all I can do is just...shake my head.

"Son, I've been using this for years", LOL! Depending on my mood that day, I might have showed him what a swirl is, actually used my car as an example. That's absolutely horrible though!!

Your mistake was trying to tell this guy anything. I would never even drop a hint to anyone regarding how to take care of their car. Talk about his engine, talk about his grand kids, talk about the weather... But not detailing.

If he asks your advice - that's another thing. But if you go up to a dude and imply your "doing it wrong" - he's going to fire back with something. So, who cares? Let him wipe his car down with brake fluid. Just smile and wave.

Screwing with those "know-it-all" son's heads...

That's exactly one of the reasons that I've been
re-using/re-purposing Windex bottles and their
spray-heads at Car Events for years and years and years.

And:
Good times are had by all...LOL!!!

Older gentleman = possible emerging cataracts. He may not be able to see the mess he's made of his finish. I worked part time for an ophthalmologist for about 15 years. A common comment from elderly women post cataract surgery was they had cleaned their house they thought was already clean. They were unable to see the fine stuff like dust before surgery but now could see it as plain as you or I can.

Oh Bob! That is just cruel, but oh so funny.

In other words, don't mess with us old timers.

Bill

Funny, I see this so much at vette events. More so than any other car shows. I watched a few vette owners do it at DetailFest.
Two things you'll never educate an "old vette" owner about is:
Windex
Z tire shine.

I love the idea of re-purposing windex bottle so much, I may do that this year at DF.

You gotta use ONR so it looks like Windex.

Repurposed Windex bottle full of ONR = pure gold
