Hi guys and gals, i have a 2009 wrangler black, some jerk keyed my door, i want to strangle the %&*@ the scratch is thin but took the black paint off, it's not down to bare metal the primer is showing, can this be buffed or does it have to be painted, also if painted would a body shop paint the door or just fill the scratch and then buff.

Here is what i tell my customers if a scratch can be buffed out or not.....take a damp finger (lick it) and rub the scratch if it disappears then it most likely can be buffed out. You said that you can see the primer so I am going to say that it will probably needs to be sprayed.

Most quality shops will sand down the area and they blend the new paint with the old paint so it matches. you cant have any tape lines or if you just paint the door then you will see that the door is a different color for the rest of the car. So for a small scratch they paint half the side of the car.

How can anyone buff away a scratch if it's down to the primer? The entire door needs to be refinished and possibly blended into the adjacent panels. Take it to the best shop you can.

Because of the depth you're not going to be able to buff it. Many deep scratches that haven't penetrated below the base coat (but are deep enough that buffing won't remove them) can sometimes be removed through wet sanding.

Fermani said it ....... repaint & blend.

thanks for the input, I'll call my insurance and have them take care of it,, I'm sure it;s and easy grand to fix.

You may want to try wet sanding to blend it in better with the paint. This will work sometimes... but will not give a perfect result. Just remember not to wet sand just that particular area, but sand around it to so you do not create a "valley" effect as to where you would see it when you got finished buffing. This can be accomplished with a sanding pad so your fingertips won't give the most pressure on the sand paper if you were to wet sand with just your hand and sandpaper. Otherwise, a repaint and a blending would be your only possibility. Good luck.

thanks ,, go for the mustang, camaro is nice but theres so much after market parts for the mustang. the challenger is nice but the price is outrageous.

After seeing the 5.0 is coming back out.. I am going to take that into consideration. I love GM and Camaros so it will be a hard decision... but a decision will come around when the time is right to buy one!

David is right. It will need to be repainted. If it is isolated to one or two panels consider yourself lucky!

I often thought of what I would do if this happened to my Camaro (besides flipping out). Then I asked myself, which body shop would I take it to and how would I know if they're really good? I can't rely on word of mouth because the people I know wouldn't know a good body shop from a bad one. Any advice on how to determine which body shop to go to in a situation similar to this?
