Car Wash Brushes (What you already knew)

So I was at my favorite coin-op car wash today. I know it's not ideal, but I live in an apartment AND it's getting cold, and I like to knock a lot of the dirt off with the pressure washer before taking it home and doing a rinseless wash or a waterless wash.

This coin op, like most, had a brush option. A black brush sitting back at the back of the car wash bay. Obviously, I don't even touch it. But curiosity got the best of me and I had like 3 minutes left so I decided to spray it out with the power washer to see just how dirty it is. As expected, the water came out muddy brown with grit, but then I started to see pebbles, rocks, and chunks! Not only that, but it wasn't a black brush, it was a white, blue, and brown multi-colored brush! Chunks of tar, and even MULCH... I had chunks of MULCH coming out of this brush that someone probably just got done smearing all over their car. I sprayed it for a good 2 minutes under pressure and it was STILL coming out muddy, gritty and dirty (but much clearer than before).

Only snapped one pic because I hadn't considered taking 'before and after' pics. I didn't bother with taking a pic of the brush itself since it's kind of meaningless without a before pic. But check out these chunks of mulch that blew out!

So I know it's not anything that y'all didn't know but I figured I'd just pass it along! Crazy!
 
Yeah! My best guess, with the mulch, is that maybe some guy got in the bed of his truck and used it like a pushbroom to push debris out of his truck. Or maybe it was just tossed on the ground and picked up all of those debris. Crazy! Dirt and grit I expected. Chunks of wood I was not!
 
Believe it or not, most coin ops I've seen have high quality boars hair brushes, like the one AG sells - because the fibers are so durable.

The problem with them is they are sat on the ground and filthy like you mentioned.
 
That's not surprising at all knowing how people are in general.... Can't get around human nature.....

I did that myself a few years ago and yes it was really bad....
 
That's just terrible. I only use the coin-op for high pressure rinse as well before taking it home for a rinseless/waterless.
 
I was driving by my local coin-op and the owner was using the brush to clean the wash bay floor!!
 
Here's an example of what the brushes at the self serve can do to your paint (just for further reinforcement :props:). This a before and after of my test spot on a friends car.

Yep!

I did notice the instructions in the bay say to clean the brush before using. But most folks probably don't do that. I do wonder how harmful it really is if you did clean it? I still wouldn't use it, but it's definitely a good idea for those who are so inclined to use the complimentary swirl installer!
 
Speaking of those car washes, I saw this picture posted somewhere else today. I think she's doing it wrong...
