Was hoping you detailers could give me some advice on PERL.

I applied this last night to clean tires (TUF Shine). No other product on the wheels. I used the Carrand brush applicators to apply and I felt like it was coated evenly. I wiped off the excess. 12 hours later I drove the car. It happened to be raining, but this is what the tires look like - very uneven in my opinion.

Thoughts?

Don't seem to have this issue with other tire gels or sprays.

Looks like there may have been some residue after cleaning and the Perl did not bond properly..or Perl and Tuf Shine don't mix well. Nice wheels. Are those OEM Tesla wheels?

I suspect leftover residue and at what dilution are you using Perl? For tires I have it at 1:1 with distilled water...

Hmmm....do you think following TUF Shine with a Megs 4:1 APC would help or skip the TUF and use Megs?

Looked even last night.

Yes: Tesla OEM wheels but powder coated anthracite grey.

Just to be clear--are you applying Perl over Tuf Shine coating on the tires? Or are you using Tuf Shine cleaner to prep for the Perl?

If you have enough TUF shine cleaner, clean the tires again. It usually takes 4-5 tries per wheel to get them completely clean. Otherwise go with Megs...just curious do you have TUF Shine coating?

+1 I wipe on very lightly with a costco MF. Then when I've got around to all 4 tires completely, I do a light wipe with a dry Costco MF and they have the perfect satin/new tire look.

The key to pearl is to spray it onto the tires, wipe overspray from wheels, let pearl dwell for 5-10 minutes, and then very lightly dab any excess off the lettering with a clean bunched up MF cloth. I find that pearl looks best when sprayed onto tires rather than wiped on.

Here is pearl at 1:1

And here is pearl at 3:1 (my preferred gloss level)

Interesting. Do most dilute and spray it on the tires?

I was using TUF Shine cleaner, not coating.

When I get another go at it, I'll try the Megs APC and spray on a 1:1 PERL.

Some tires just don't take some dressings well. I find that on some tires a second application after 10-15 minutes helps even it out. I usually apply 1:1 and if it doesn't give the look I want I will follow with undiluted.

If your tires are still pretty clean, save yourself the extra work of re-cleaning and just wipe them down really well and spray another coat of pearl on them! :-)

I use Tuf Shine Tire cleaner and PERL on my tires. It bonds fine. That being said I use a foam tire applicator and I use it straight - undiluted. If you look at Just's pictures of his @ 1:1, that is really shiny. Not hating, just saying that my tires when I use it straight are not nearly that shiny.

When I apply, I have never gone back and wiped it after application. Its been really even for me, but it doesn't last long in the rain. We are supposed to have rain most of this week, and my PERL is a week or two old, so it will be gone by the end of this week. (PS I also have UTTG on a tire to compare against PERL).

I used to wipe the pearl on undiluted but find that my clients prefer a bit more gloss. That and the fact that I'm able to dilute, save product, and get even coverage by spraying it on. Also, I do not wipe the tires afterwards. I only dab any excess spots of pearl in the corners of lettering or any raised design areas.

With that being said, I too prefer more of a satin on my personal vehicles. For this I dilute 1:4 and spray on for a nice dark satin look. :-)

Those pics look to me like an oily silicone type dressing was topped with a water based type dressing - without the oily stuff being cleaned off completely. I don't believe the problem was with your application method of the PERL or your choice of TS Tire Cleaner.

Oily dressings can get absorbed into the tire rubber a bit. Once the surface is clean, a steady state is formed and more oily dressing can come to the surface with time. To remove them 100% can be quite a lot of work. I also believe the TS Tire Cleaner is likely the best product available to accomplish this.

I don't believe you would have had this problem if your previous dressing was not a silicone heavy dressing. Just from experience, I regularly mix OptiBond, PoorBoys, Prima, Blackfire, and some other dressings after only cleaning the tires once and have yet to have an issue.

This is all conjecture though...

Maybe I missed it, but what was your previous dressing?

Previously would have used pinnacle black onyx gel, black onyx spray, sonax gel. Maybe a blackfire gel sample I got from AGO.

Perhaps just a little more elbow grease is needed.

Oh I get you. Dabbing is definitely different than wiping. There have been times I probably should have dabbed :D.

So if you dilute PERL it becomes glossier?

I think spraying it on makes it glossier. Diluting it will make for a more satin look.
