CCS or Flat pads for a noob?

I have been lurking for a while now and learning so I can order my PC kit with the right pads and other stuff. The 4 hour deal has the package I want but with CCS(grid ones in my mind) and I have seem to see more people recomending the flat pads for those of us who are machine virgins and only doing our own cars.

I guess my question is will I regret not having the flat pads? Both cars are in decent shape and the worst one is a 2008 silver truck so I was going to go Orange,Course green,white,grey and blue on the pads.

Any thoughts?Feed back please
 
IMO....the flat pads dont let the product "cake up" as much. You'll notice the ccs has those indentions that really like to hold on the product.

I also feel that the flats pads allow for more heat to be produced for a little easier correction, especially on a DA that isn't a flex.

In my experience with CCS pads, I think they work fine with SMAT (M-105/M-205 for example) polishes that don't rely on the abrasives to be broken down to finish out nicely.

I find that when working with a DAT polish (PB SSR 2.5 for example) the dimples tend to hold polish in them and it doesn't break down properly and it is harder to get the full potential out of the polish, therefore I prefer flat pads.

This may be a somewhat advanced reply for a newb to understand but it may also challenge you to read up on the difference between SMAT and DAT polishes.

Either way you go you will learn the way that is best for you so don't sweat it.
 
I've been using only CCS pads and really like them. In fact I ordered another pack of 6 the other day. I am using them on a Flex however.
 
Dave makes a great point and I agree with him 100% if you can follow what he is talking about! I like the flat pads because they correct faster and they feel better IMO! But I still use some ccs pads with great success! If you are new to DA polishing the ccs pads are great and as you refine your personal technique and personal preferences then try other pads! Pads are just like LSP's.....find what works for you!

For a couple of reasons.


  1. They're thinner therefore compress less and polish more efficiently with less effort.
  2. They're thinner and absorb less product so more product is not wasted.
  3. No small pockets to retain product
  4. Rounded edges vs. sharp edges on the CCS pads
  5. Less expensive
 
I agree with most all that's been said. With alot of things in life...the more you know more you unnecessarily over analyze things.

Try both and other pads, develop your own opinions, use what works best. Often times i feel like guys in the detailing world over analyze ALOT of things. Stick with what works for you

Those are some very good reasons. I'll have to try the flat pads out next time.

They're definitely worth a try. Like I said I have both and use both. What I'm discovering is I just like the way the thinner pads work when compared to the thicker CCS pads.

Just to add more variables to this discussion I use Lake Country Kompressor pads on my rotary.

All the pads will fill their own roll and each and every one of us will have a slightly different approach and opinion. It's all about what's working for you.............and me of course!
