cen-tech paint thickness gauge

Did you calibrate it?

I have one mirror ring, one side have a white sticker other side have a blue clear sheet so I peel this side. Take the only calibrating foil I have ( 99+ micron) but it on the mirror plate hold the trigger, it read 87 microns.

So
1) I hold the calibration button, it flash and say RUN.
2) Hold the trigger and take a reading
3) 87 and number flash
4) I hit the ''up'' button to put it to 99.
5) nothing happens so i hold ''cal'' button again.
6) 000 appears on my screen like if the unit just reset
7) hold the trigger again to take a new reading. it read 000 !!!

I don't understand, there's like 3 button on the unit I can't be that stupid lol..Im the MAN

Hasn't anybody wondered why this Model can be sold for under 10 Dollars and the ones sold on AG, costs Hundreds ?

Hasn't anybody wondered why ? Does AG have an opinion on this ?

Cobraa,
Here are the steps to calibrating you gauge.

1) Press the trigger to turn it on.
2) Press the "CAL" button for 4 seconds until "HOLD CAL" shows at the bottom of the LCD display. Then the number "1" will flash in the LCD display.

3) Remove the covering on the metal calibration disk.
4) Press the sensor against the bare metal calibration disk and pull the trigger to take a measurement.

5) It should read 0. If it doesn't, use the up or down arrow key to set the LCD readout to 0.
6) Press the "CAL" key.
7) The LCD should blink "---" three times and then display "--2"

8) Lay the 3.9 mil or 99 micron test strip on the bare metal disk. Make sure there are no air bubbles under it or your readings will not be accurate.
9)Press and keep the sensor on the test strip and hold the trigger until it shows a measurement in the LCD display.

10) Use the up and down arrow keys the set the readings to the value printed on the test foil strip.
11) Press the "Cal" key again and the LCD will flash "---" three times and then show "--3"
12) Remove the Guage from the test strip then press and hold the "Cal" for 4 seconds to exit the calibration mode.

Hope this helps,
Derrick

GMC Denali,
These are some pretty accurate guages, and the lighted LCD is a big bonus.

The same could be said for all the other tools Harbor Freight sells..

Bottom line is, you get what you pay for. Their tools have a reputation for a reason. It's like comparing Snap-On tools to the chinese budget sets you can buy in Big Lots. Or Pinnacle Souveran to Nu-Finish. Or a Mercedes to a Kia.

Okay so I will donate 5$ on paypal to anybody who will be able to teach me how to take measure as my centech gives non-sens thckness

Cobraa,
The info you wanted is above.

it was under $10 couse it was on clearance discontnued model, i think it was around $80 new, and becouse it was in harbor freight i dont think they marketed for cars, if they did im sure it would be a lot more,
just think of it as P21S and P100 stuff, depends for what industry it meant for the price will show

company charges what they think its worth, dont think it cost more then $10 to make this thing, most expensive part i heard is the probe

Does anyone know the acceptable range of thickness for wetsanding, cutting, etc.? I don't know what is thick enough and what is too thin, but I have the tool. So it's somewhat useless at this point.

depends on paint. some paints have clear coat that is pretty thin. also i heard that most of UV protection is in top 12 microns of clear coat so you running risk of removing that when wetsanding. but not sure how much it is true.
general rule is that clear coat is about 50% of total thickness of paint layer if it was not polished before. if you have about 130+ microns you can wetsand it a little.
