I have been considering Wolfgang Uber Ceramic Coating#but I was wondering after the expected life of 2 years of the coating does it have to be reapplied ? If so how do you prepare to reapply another coat of ceramic coating ?

Hello Tino7,

Wolfgang rates Uber Ceramic as 3 years for 'painted surfaces' but your point is still taken, exactly! what do we do? Yes it will have to be re-applied or some replacement in any case as the attributes of the coating will have diminished to the point of being ineffectual in its purpose.

Coatings in general will require a polishing for proper removal, that is, light physical abrasion with a light polish and appropriate pad. Best case scenario if in 2-3 years duration you havent 'corrected' the paint finish it'll be about time anyway so the coating will be compromised regardless.

So in this case the benefit of the polishing phase will be 3 fold; removing previous incarnation of coating, leveling out swirls, scratches, etc. and prepping the surface for the fresh coating.

Literature regarding clear instruction as to proper coating rejuvenation upon 'End Of Life' leaves me a bit wanting, what I stated is simply general conventional wisdom and may not apply for all coatings.

Thank you very much for the help. So when I polish in preparation for the new coat of ceramic coating does the old coat have to be completely removed ? Or is the polishing done to clean up the surface for the new coat to stick?

Mr Tino7,

In this context we are talking of degrees rather than absolutes, the existing coating need not necessarily and without fail be removed entirely, just the surface be 'prepped' enough in such a way that bonding of the new coating not suffer impairment thus compromising its ability to endure its full term life.

In an ideal setting it would be nice to know just when enough work has been done to completely remove an existing coating and therefore begin with 'virgin territory' for the new coating to adhere. However I know of no way to determine this so as long as you've done an acceptable job of surface prep and are satisfied with your results you should enjoy another 2-3 years of coating life. There have been few reports of longevity issues with coatings when applied over a properly prepped surface. Also remember its accepted conventional wisdom that 2 layers of coatings work just fine with each other, more so when its the same coating/manufacturer.
