CG BlackLight a step back on my soft clear

Knowing just how soft the clear coat (DuPont ChromaClear sprayed 5-20-11) is on my truck, I'm always looking for new products that leaves less of that dreaded haze so common on soft clear coats. With HD Polish I had it soooooo close... just needed a slightly finer abrasive product and life would be good lol. Read a lot of good reviews about CG Black Light and that it had just the slightest of cutting abrasives and thought I'd give a try!

Started with GG ROP with a 5.5 Black Finishing pad on setting 4 1/2. Applied BL thin with just a slight bit of pressure on half the hood. Waited the 15 minute dry/haze time. Remved with a Gold Cobra MF and could instantly notice the hazing, about where M205 leaves on this clear coat. Oh well... moved to a Blue Finessing Pad to minimize (user) pressure. This brought it almost back to where it was but still showed the hazing

Now the search continues for that elusive polish & pad combo for this soft clear lol

Going back to the HD Polish (just the hood) tomorrow as it works out really good. Still would love some opinions which fine polish you guys would recommend (HD Polish is less abrasive than PO85RD).

I've read a lot of reviews and seen comparison pics of HD vs PO85RD vs M205. Most of the reviewers posted HD was their new go to finishing polish as they got a slightly more glossy finish with easier removal and no dusting. Wish I had some 85RD to compare with myself. I know it's good stuff and it I'd surly get used. If any others here have used both I'd like to hear your input.

Yeah after using the BL it seems like a nice AOI. If my clear was harder it probably would have looked great IMO.

For really soft finicky paint Sonax nano paint cleaner or their new Perfect Finish polish are well...perfect for soft paint. Perfect finish is very expensive and hard to find.

HD polish actually finishes down better than 85rd. I'm surprised that HD didn't do the job.

85RD is great final polish for soft paint, is does not dust, and is easy to wipe off... only catch is that it often leaves a bit of an oily looking residue behind. Easily removed with IPA.

Found the Sonax Perfect Finish $79 + s/h

The HD finished really good just trying to squeeze out a tiny bit more. I broke out the DeWalt 849x and with a CCS Gold Ultra Finishing pad and did some jeweling. Starting at 1000 then finishing at 600 RPM with just the weight of the rotary. I've probably squeezed out all I can get. I'm going to order the G Techniq P2 Jeweling Polish to have something with a lite cut just for maintenance.

I'll echo the sentiments on 85RD, although I still occasionally grumble about it being a bit sticky. Seems like I whine about Menzerna stuff in general any time the humidity climbs or the temperatures drop. Nonetheless, still my go-to on those worrisome dark BMW and Porsche finishes.

I've been wanting to take the plunge on either Sonax or HD...if not both...but I just haven't been able to justify it. Buy the tool when you've got the job to use it, right?

I think this is different from what silverfox is referring to, I too also have a sonax paint cleaner, and really works great on soft paints, i only use this with my GG ROP with setting not exceeding 3.5 with black pad. But keep in mind that Sonax paint cleaner is an AIO, and may fill due to its carnauba content. Good luck with your project! Keep us updated. :buffing:

Not with the BL but a couple weeks back I did a lite cut with HD before applying a new wax and used the 3 setting.

I did 3 passes with the Gold Pad at speed 5. The gold pad has zero cut so only the super fine nano abrasives in the HD Polish did the cutting. Wiped off the residue, reloaded the pad and did 3 passes at speed 3. This brought it to a higher level than I've worked the paint since owning the truck.

I got my spf for 59.95 and it works great on soft paint, but I can't think of polish finer than HD polish. Maybe scholls concepts s40? Or maybe an AIO product might work?

wow thats some strong hazing for what is considered a mild product. looks like it has lots of cleaning power.

regarding Sonax perfect finish, I would just go ahead and get the Sonax nano polish instead. Its the same technology as Perfect Finish , but it just has less polishing power. they both finish the same. Sonax perfect finish is better for a 1 step but the tradeoff is the price.
