Okay so somehow my key broke off in the warehouse somewhere lol idk where. But I just called the dealer and asked how much it would be for a new key and its damn near 100 bucks. Sooo my question is if I make a copy of the spare key I have and than hang the remainder of the key on the key ring with it will the car start lol just would use it as the "emergency key". I'm not all that familiar with the chip in the key but seems like it would work right lol :)

Notice how its a Ford key.. just sayin'. If you can make a copy I would go that route.. but a lot of key making places wont make car key copies. And really $100 for a key copy? I'm so glad my car came with 3 keys.

I had to get replacement keys made for an 04 Nissan Altima I use to have. I only had 1 key and needed a 2nd for the automatic starter I had put in.

Dealership charge me $100 for the key. Because it had a chip in it that had to be programed. Amazing how they can rip you off for a key that probably cost them all of $10 to make.

Most chipped keys use ohms that are measured thru the lock cylinder itsself,I'm about 99% sure your vehicle will noy start unless the correct key is placed.I would call a locksmith, they can make a new key and if need be can reprogram the halo system on that ford to match new key.

Yes, it will work. That is how remote starters work. They place your key in a "coffin" hide it somewhere near the steering column and it tricks your security system.

You may want to call a locksmith. I had the same problem with a "chipped" GM key (Corvette), the dealer quoted 125$ plus a charge to determine the resistance code. The locksmith charged me 18$ per key, and told me what the code was. I got a couple of spares.

All I can say you guys are lucky only $100 for replacement key. You key shock get an Audi - $340

GM Keys are based on a resistor.

Most other chipped keys, like your Ford keys use an RFID system where when you to go start the car, the car sends out a an RF signal which activates the chips circuit and the chip sends out a signal back to the car. If you have the chip containing part of your broken key close enough to your ignition, the car should still start.

I know on my car that I tried putting tinfoil around the key head where the chip was contained to see what happened when I tried starting the car, it started but stalled again within a second of starting. Same thing happened 3 times till I removed the tinfoil and the car started and ran normally.

Personally I would go with your idea for the emergency key, get a blank non chip key cut, and hang the head of the original key on a keyring, or tape/ glue it to the head of the new key.

check out ebay. i bought new keys on ebay with the chip for my infiniti at a fraction of the price the dealer was talking about. then i got a buddy of mine who is a locksmith to cut it and program the chip for me.

try online before getting rapped at the dealership!

I think I saw Home Depot having that service. Could be worth a drive over to see.

Awesome responses guys .... yea trust me last thing I want to do is go to the dealership haha..... seems though that locksmiths cant do anything if they don't have two "working" keys. I'm going to call my friend again who is a locksmith and find out what I can do. Again thanks for all the responses!!

May I ask?

Are you positive the key is chipped? Reason I ask is, GM says (and still says) my truck keys are chipped and the are NOT.

Really made a difference when my 'other half' lost her set (along with the RV keys...grrr!) at a rest area in MT...$1.50 at my local locksmith store vs whatever the customer will spend.

You could check to see if they are chipped by doing what I said I did in my original post where I put tinfoil around my keyhead. If ur car starts then maybe the keys aren't really chipped...
