chrome wheels

I bought some used Cragar SS Mags, one wheel has goldish brown tint, is this oxidation from sitting in storage and can it cleaned

You can try chrome polish. Mothers makes some really good chrome and metal polish.

Or you try Autosol that removes bluish thingy from chrome. I guess it is similar to your brown spot

I did try chrome polish it seemed to help a little. I'll try the autosol, I may need to just buff it harder, but if it will work it's better than buying a new wheel. Thanks for the suggestion.

I've owned a bunch of Chrome Cragar Mag Wheels and think they look great when kept cleaned and polished...

As for cleaning, get a good chrome polish, aluminum polishes will work but chrome polishes seem to actually work better.

Some guys use #000 Steel Wool but I find that steel scratches both glass and chrome.

You could try a light cleaning scotch bright pad we even carry some here at Autogeek. Use this WITH the chrome polish.

But here's the most important thing about chrome wheels.


AFTER you get them cleaned and polished to the point you're happy...


KEEP THEM CLEAN

By this I mean keep them INCREDIBLY CLEAN. If you let dirt build up in the cracks and crevices, this means dirt and road film which is an oily substance, it will attract more dirt and all of this together attracts and holds MOISTURE against the chrome plating. It is the moister/water against the chrome that causes the chrome to flake and peel off. The moisture penetrates past the chrome and causes rust. The rust causes peeling and flaking and once this starts it only gets worse.

So ALWAYS do a great job of washing the chrome incredibly well by having some very good wheel cleaning brushes on hand. Brushes that will get into the seams of the wheel.
