You could try to put ground coffee inside the car, close all windows and door, let it sit for 24h. Coffee the best & cheap odor neutralizer
Uh Oh..I probably would have trouble with this suggestion......Whenever I detect the slightest hint of the presense of coffee, I gotta light one (or more) up!

{Haven't tried this one before...Might give it a whirl.}

Some have suggested the use of an ozone generator...I agree! But if the OP and his friend don't have one of their own; and, since the ones that are available for rental are usually low powered (500 mg/hr or less); or, if the problem would happen to resurface--another costly rental would have to be shouldered.
Therefore, I would suggest a trip to either a Detail Shop or a local janitorial business for further advice/smoke odor removal.
If the cost of smoke removal becomes a hindrance, then, as others have said, riddance of the vehicle may be an option.
