Hey guys, been a while since ive been on the forum, sorry, busy with work and life, anyways, unfortunately its time for me to get rid of my ride, years have taken its toll and dont feel like putting anymore money into it, so ive been looking around, which is even more frustrating with my current financial situation, so of course limited to what I can buy. That being said I found as used f150 with decent miles on it and pretty decent condition overall, but unfortunately the previous owner was a smoker and of course its got a pretty strong smell, which sucks cause its a pretty good deal. So my question is, will it be possible to get the smell out completely and if so what the best way to go about it, what products or techniques are working for you guys. Thanks, any comments would be very helpful

Hello,

I am a smoker and every time I sell a vehicle I vanish the smoke by using these simple steps:

You need a HOT WATER EXTRACTOR...and some other products mentioned

-Remove the mats and push all seats back as far as you can so as much carpet is exposed as possible.
- Pre-Treat as much of the carpet as possible with DP Pre-Treatment or something equivalent.
- Do the same for the seats if they are cloth or upholstery.
- Use the hot water extractor with the solution you choose to suck the contamination and smell out of the carpets and seats. (that's where the smoke burrows)
- BUY A AIR FRESHENER CALLED OZIUM, or Poor Boys Air Freshener (USE THE ENTIRE BOTTLE THROUGHOUT THE CAR) Only with OZIUM.
-Clean the Plastics, Vynil and Rubber components within the car and coat them with a UV protectant.

This Process has helped me quite a few times.......Obviously be sure to clean windows, jambs, Glove Box's and be sure to change the cabin air filter if it has one.

If I can think of anything else I will post it.

P.S. USE GLOVES!!

Just light up a cigar, that should cover the cigarette smell. :close1:

I just steam everything..... then if for some reason that doesnt work (which it does 99% of the time) you can finish it off with an odor bomb. I get ALOT of deodorization jobs and all I ever do is steam everything (including in the vents).

Actually, I seen decented candles and sprays on store shelves you buy that kills odor.

I also agree with B&B. You have to kill the bacteria that is causing the smell!!

:iagree: Yep! That's what we do.... Works every time!

The headlining holds most of the smell. So that needs to be given a good clean. I use a foaming interior cleaner (autoglym high foam shampoo) as you shouldn't really use a pure liquid as it can cause the headlining to sag.

A good steam clean followed by Megs Odor Eliminator should do the trick.

Thanks for all the comment guys, Ill be taking ownership of the truck tommorow and probably staying up all night cleaning it, lol, and swapping all my stereo stuff, lucky for me all the stereo stuff the same from my mazda. Ill take some pics and post them when I can.

There's a brand out on the market called, "Smoke Odor exterminator and air freshener." This works really well and they have candles not just spray that actually kill the smell of anything and includes smoke. The company who distributes it is called Tobacco Outlet products.

i have cleaned the complete inside.used an ozone machine, run the car and use the re circulate button.so this gets the smells out .putting a box of baking soda in it before this helps too. meguiars #23 helps,so does wizards auto fresh.

keep it simple..Dakota Odor Bombs (sold thru AG) are easy and effective. They come in several scents and while you may have to do a few applications..they work well. About 8 bucks a can and you can do many applications. I spray the carpet/under the car mats/headliner and then close it up..check the next day and apply as needed.

We use a commercial fogging system and then detail thoroughly. The problem with smoke odor is many of the particles are atomized and due to the slight cabin pressure in a vehicle when the windows are closed the particles are "pushed" into all parts of the vehicle. It gets in the venitilation system, padding in the headliner and carpeting and other inaccessible areas.

The most effective way to rid or reduce the smoke odor is to fog the vehicle and run the air conditioning and heating system with the recirculation system on over a period of time. After that, you have to fog the vehicle without the system running and let it sit for about an hour.

After all that is done the vehicle needs to be thoroughly detailed. This includes hot water extracting the carpets and wiping down all surfaces.

That's the way we do it and we charge about an hour and a half for labor. We have never had a vehicle returned because we didn't get rid of the smoke smell. Now we did have an issue with getting rid of the smell of this one guys Grandfather in a truck he inherited. In our defense though, I had no idea what his Grandfather smelled like so I had nothing to benchmark our results against.

Update... Well so far I thoroughly cleaned the interior, scrubbed pretty much everything I could, hot water extracted the upholstery and carpets, used an entire bottle of Ozium, and leave the all the doors open when I can and so far its working, the smells still there but not as bad as before, so I think I'm gonna fog the car as suggested and see whats what, again thanks for all the advice, keep ya updated, and hopefully soon I can get some detail pics up of the truck, its clean but haven't been able to do any real polishing, cant wait.
