I have a 2014 BMW 335 in black metallic that I plan on using my Porter Cable on next week. I've had the car since December and put a coat of Klasse AIO and sealant on it when new. Do I need to clay prior to the polish and sealant.

Thanks for the help.

Do the bag test!
I'm willing to bet you do. I've had my 14 Altima since 12/22 and clayed when I bought it. It def needs to be done again before I polish and coat it.

Just do it!! I use the Nanoskin Blues sponge as my clay as it saves about 50% of the traditional clay. Since I have the Sponge, I clay about 1 time every 2 months. If you are using the traditional clay, might I suggest a Nanoskin sponge. The blue is all you need based on what you do to your ride

BTW, Nice ride!!

Thanks for the quick response guys. This forum is always so helpful. I figured I would probably need to clay. Kamakaz, thanks for the compliment on the car. It's a lot of fun.

:iagree: For peace of mind. Remember prepping your paint will get you quality results.

With the BMW brake dust the way it is, I would also IronX between washing and claying.

Simple answer: YES

The following pics are of clay after doing a 1 day old bmw 335is/white

You would be very surprised at how bad brand new cars are.

You'd be surprised how much contaminants are on the paint from the factory, the trip overseas, various transport, etc. Definitely yes clay before you polish with your Porter Cable.

You clay every two months? Do you follow up with a polish? I've found that some type of marring is unavoidable during the claying process and it is often recommended to follow up with a light polish.

If you are not polishing, then most likely there is some marring being left behind. Which is fine, if that doesn't bother you. Personally it drives me crazy; I wouldn't clay unless I plan on polishing afterwards.

Anyone who says they don't experience any marring isn't inspecting their paint closely enough afterwards.

Input please, if I would use iron-x do I still need to clay or do both

So far I have not experienced any marring (knock on wood) issues. If I do, I will polish it with Menzerna SF4500. I just clayed my car 2 times in 3 weeks. I tried a certain wax here (both bought on AGO) and I stripped the car both times as I preferred the original wax...so had to do it all over again.

I would assume I am not experiencing any marring as: 1. I lube the crap out of the car...LOL and 2. when I use the sponge, it glides real easy and no marring probably because the car is already prepped from before. The sponge itself is why I like claying now. It is so easy to use and you can clay your car pretty fast.

The old fashioned way was time consuming. Clay on your hand, kneading it, making sure it is properly lubed, if you drop the clay your screwed,...etc.

Maybe I am Nanoskinning so much I am getting used to the technique. Practice makes perfect and before I would only clay 1 time every 6 months.

But in the beginning, you are correct, I had some marring issues, as of now, none.

:buffing:

Yes, just because you Iron-X you still need to clay. However, always Iron-X before claying. And yes, on a first detail, it would be a good idea to do both.

I just did my '14 F150 Limited, build date 5/22/15, purchased in June.
I trashed almost an entire clay bar with what came off of a "new" vehicle.

It is only July 2014. You are really getting a jump on the rest of us. :-)

Re: Claying new car-with Speedy Surface Prep Towel

I have been using the Speedy Surface Prep Towel (I think I have the fine grade) with Optimum Detailer for over a year.

The Speedy Surface Prep Towel is a microfiber towel with a high-tech polymerized rubbing coating applied to one side. This polymerized rubber coating grabs above surface contaminants and pulls them away from the surface.

This towel really works and has even removed fresh over sprayed primer. It also is fast and I can do all flat surfaces on my car in about 10 minutes.

It's a little bit unnerving when you first use it as it makes a scratching sound like you are rubbing with coarse sandpaper. Try it on a small patch first and you will see what I mean. Don't worry though it doesn't scratch.

The towels are quite expensive but they last virtually forever as you clean the contaminants off by rinsing with water.

Speedy Surface Prep Towel Item #DP-SSP589M is a valuable day to day tool to keep your paint clean.

You certainly don't "need" to clay before polishing but you should. I like the baggie test as previously mentioned and see what it feels like before and after. It is also a good idea to do a good iron decon before you clay.

I have an 07 335 coupe (E92) in that same color. I was amazed when i clayed it right after delivery when new. When you think about it in transit, it left the factory and via train was brought to Bremerhaven and loaded on a ship (covered). Was shipped to New Jersey and either railed or trucked (can't remember) to SC, then trucked to my local dealer here in Tampa. The odometer had 3.6 miles on it at delivery but it had travelled thousands!

And we'll give you some good points for at least getting some protection on it from the start! Now it's time to refine that gorgeous BSM paint a little more. Will you be cutting or leveling the paint at all with your PC? Or just going to Klasse AIO and SG?

Yes. IronX will will remove below surface contaminants that clay cannot get to. It will also remove some of the contaminants that are at surface level, but clay will remove the rest.
