I have a 96 maxima that has gold lettering and emblems and I'm curious what you would use to clean them up...assuming that's possible. They all have a black coloring to portions of them and I'm not sure if that's gold that's missing or if its accumulated gunk on it.

Have you tried something very simple like wiping them with a one-step cleaner/wax?

The staining is either topical and it will remove with a little chemical cleaning action or it's permeated into the surface and nothing will remove it but a little chemical cleaning action should improver it.

How does the big picture look?

That is the rest of the car?

:)

Overall, there are a lot of scratches and a couple feet of repetitive door dings and scratches from where the previous owners opened their other car door into it in the garage. It was given to us from family members and so I want to do my best to get it into better condition than it was given to us in. In the scheme of things I'm sure that sparkling letters aren't going to make or break the appearance of this car but I want to clean up what I can.

I'm planning on getting DG501 for my white equinox. Would this be an appropriate cleaner wax to try on these letters?

Yes. Apply with a microfiber towel to a small area then inspect. If all looks good then keep going.

Some of these letters were plastic and some were anodized I believe? It's been a while since I worked on something this old with letters like this.

A cleaner/wax is just a simple approach plus you can use it over the rest of your car.

It looks to be fading form the picture? But try mike's method to clean them. the answer should be pretty easy if when wiping/buffing you notice chrome or gold specks in your case on the microfiber well then there isn't much you can do except to pull and paint them or have them redone if you can't live with them as is or just wanna make a weekend project?

I've had good results on emblems with Klasse AIO. Also does a nice job on stuff like door jambs, and wells around the trunk and engine bay.

If they will clean up, a little Never Dull should do it very quickly and cheaply.
