Clear Coat Toughness

My 2 pennies.

There are newer Honda/Acura products out that don't seem to have such soft clear coats. TL's ('04 and up) and the current generation ('05 and up) Odyssey's seem to be in that camp. I can't vouch for any other just yet.

So 106ff won't take off too much cc from those 2 ? :p

First of all wicked topic. Here is my little bit of info hopefully someone else can verify/confirm it.

I have a 1995 Volvo and I found the clear coat to be soft, I used XMT 3 and XMT 1 with the PC. This was the vehicle that started it off for me, I know Pirex has done lots of Volvo's maybe he will join in and confirm.

That's all I got :D

Wicked idea Dan, I'll be printing a copy of it too and keeping it in my garage :righton:

Little late, but thanks Carlos.

I think it would be cool if after someone finished a car, they posted the clear coat info here. We could develop a GIANT database of all the info.

Yea, sorry about being a late response but I think your idea is a wicked idea. That way you could use the chart or the info posted when you come across a vehicle. It's good to have a game plan before you even touch the vehicle.

No, I meant me thanking you for your comments was a little late.

+111... I hope this thread goes much further than my attempt at the same issue on autopia... I'll definitely be posting here every time I do a different car
D&D, may I just suggest you make an Excel file which you can update and repost every week or so, or as 5-10 new results come in... I'll do it as well when I have a little more time... probably in the next 3-4 days...

Yeah, Ill make another one that includes make, model, and year.

Thanks for taking the time to do this. There is one I do disagree on. Jeeps, their paint is hard as nails, about like a Dodge IMO..
Looking forward for the one that includes make, model, and year.

I based Jeep off of one car. Its a very general chart. But Ill change it for you.

"By the way, nobody ever posted Hyundai/Kia detail. I guess owners of those cars don't really care about their finish..."
You have at least one Hyundai owner here. :p

Talk about confusing. I had read on forum many times that 06 Jet Black BMW 325i was soft. The chart indictes hard. So which is correct ?

Mazdaspeed3....unbelievably soft.

Had to buy all new MF towels and different wash mitts. The ones I were using before (which didnt hurt my previous Nissan) were definitely causing swirl marks.

Dident see this before now, but yes. I have done some volvos, and I will say they are soft up to the first V70 came, the first V70 is medium. The 850 i will say is soft. :)

I take offense to that statement. My wifes Hyundai Accent is VERY clean and is one PITA to work on, I would say hard for sure. Surprised there is no Subaru yet?!?! Very soft, the most delicate paint I have seen, but I have only worked on 3 cars.

Well Jeep is def hard.

I have heard black on BMW's is soft, but the rest is hard. I have yet to do a black BMW, but the two I have done have been hard.
