I REMOVED MY DECALS TODAY TO GET READY TO SELL THE TRUCK BUT THEN LEFT BEHIND AN OUTLINE OF MY COMPANY NAME. SO I HIT THE PAINT WITH A WHITE PAD AND NANO AND NOTHING THEY WERE STILL THERE. SO I MOVED UP TO ORANG E PAD AND OPTIMUM COMPOUND AND I CAN STILL SEE THE NAME REAL FAINT SO THEN I TRYED A YELLOW CUTTING PAD AND COMPOUND AND STILL THEY WERE THERE SO I HIT IT A GAIN AND THE PAD TURNED GREEN AND THERE WAS THIS MARK ON THE PAINT!!! NOW THE TRUCKS 5 YEARS OLD WITH BASE COTE CLEARCOTE. AND BEFORE I STARTED DETAILING I HAD ITH DETAILED A FEW TIMES A DETAILER BUT ALL THEY USE ARE CHEAP AIO WAXES POLISHES. AND IVE ONLY USED A COMPOUND LAST YEAR ONCE YELLOW PAD AND TODAY 2 TIMES WITH A YELLOW PAD AND COMPOUND SO HOW COULD I HAVE GONE TROUGH THE CLEAR ALL READY???HERS A FEW PICS

weird i know right im never uesing yellow pads and compound anymore

Did you buy the truck new? If not, the spot could have be re-sprayed with SS paint.

What kind of truck is it?
2002 ford f350 compounded only 2 times in the past with a cutting pad and compound. even with a p/c you can breach the clear cote. for now on ill stay away from compound and cutting pads.

Sorry that happened to you but I appreciate you posting this to warn others-I too thought polishing through the clear would be nearly impossible but apparently its not too hard.

it wasnt hard at all i wouldnt recomend a yellow cutting pad and compound unless really needed.

Paint Thickness Gauge (PTG) - most paint thickness gauges work by sensing the distance between the sensor and the metal base material. That’s total distance, which would be the thickness of all layers (primer, base, colour, and clear coats) and any repainted material, etc. You have to take an educated guess as to how much each layer consists of.

An electronic paint thickness gauge can be an invaluable tool, before buffing it’s always a good idea to check the paint film thickness to see how much of the paint film thickness available, check is periodically during the process and on completion to see how much was removed. Take measurements with a paint and coating thickness gauge and mark them on a template so that you have a reading of before / after polishing. Take readings on each panel left – right every 2- 4 inches, then drop down 2-inches and repeat. – Paint Thickness Template - http://s3.photobucket.com/albums/y88/TOGWT/?action=view&current=carplan9br-3.jpg

Using a paint thickness gauge gives a professional detailer credibility and also acts as an insurance against ‘break-though’ of a clear coat, which would entail a re-paint and I suspect a very irate customer. Original paint has a better resale value than a re-painted vehicle, plus they will lose the use of their vehicle for some days. The ideal setup would be a DFT Combo for the metals and a PosiTector 200 B/Adv for the composites.

If you use a car outline template and mark the paint thickness, you can advise the customer of any potential problems and you’ll also have a permanent record of the customers paint surface, which can be used as a reference each time the car is polished.

Very informative link concerning pad and product choices and how problems occur. Do all pad manufacturers use the same pad colors to indicate the same aggressiveness for their products? Sometimes it seems like one manu. orange pad doesn't feel as aggressive as anothers

Nope, they are manufacturer specific. Lake Country, Edge, Meguire's all different...

and it gets even more confusing, like Lake Country makes two different 6.5" Green CCS. One is before white, one is after white. Go figure, but I would always make sure I had the right pad before I went to use it.

You can write what they are on the side with a sharpie, thats how I make sure I grab the right green pad.
