Coated my tires today and WOW,

Tough shine kit is 40 + shipping

The TW kit goes on sale at places for 11.99 even at retail it's less than half price, no one has done a comparison on the same car between the two

Tuf shine coating is only $25. I don't need the tire cleaner or brush that comes with the kit.
None of the stores around me carry the turtle wax for less than $16. Oh well I have too much tire shine to use up anyway ha.

Hey Guys, Stumbled onto this thread - Interesting stuff. Thought I would chime in with a vote for Tuff Shine.

I gave it a shot last year because I was tired of always applying dressing (I tried many kinds) only to have them look bat up after one weekend of cruising & fling crap all over my freshly detailed paint. Did it that way for many, many years - had to be a better way by now. This stuff caught my eye.

And this stuff is great! First application is a PIA because you have to really clean the crap out of the tires or it wont work. Kit comes with 'Special Soap" & a brush. I read so may complaints about Tuff Shine failing & it always seemed to be from not cleaning the tires well enough. So I bought a Stiff brush for my drill ($6 ebay) so I wouldn't have to work so hard scrubbing.

I took the wheels off so it was easier.

I scrubbed each tire 6 times total (took me about 3 1/2 hours!) - Not wanting to risk running out of the "Special Soap" I used Simple Green for the first 3 scrubbings using the Drill Brush & then 3 more scrubbings with the Special Soap, also using the drill brush. Always rinse the brush & tires off between scrubbings - thats what instructions say & thats what I did.

These were new tires with a couple light applications of Aerospace 303 on them.

I then masked off the Chrome Wheels & applied two coats of Tuff Shine - I was after a satin sheen that was BLACK - like a new tire. Apparently the more coats you apply, the shinier it gets.

Stuff dries in about 10 min & you can touch it, work with the tire, anything - completely dry. No fling, no crap sticking no mess. You wont be picking bugs & crap off your greasy tires anymore.

I ran the tires for 6 months with 2 coats and the satin sheen was nice, Stayed a rich BLACK , SUPER EASY to clean and never wore off... except for the front tires when I was running the Autocross at Good Guys - high speed sharp turns caused tire flex & wore off 1/2 or so of the Tuff Shine on the outer most edge of the tires.

Another cool thing about TuiffShine - I took a small paint brush & brushed on some stuff on the edges where it wore off & you can barely tell anymore.

Now, Here's the best part.... EASY... I mean EASY maintenance. Wipe with damp rag, wipe with dry rag - done! - Takes less the 4 min to clean all 4 tires & no mess. I do it every weekend before the car shows - so easy its ridiculous & tires always looked great.

So now I decided I wanted more shine to the tires.
I took em off last weekend, wiped them down & applied 3 more coats of the stuff right over top of what was already on there to each tire. WOW -

Now I have a total of 5 coats on each tire - and the bottle of stuff that came with the kit is still 3/4 full. I bet I can reapply a couple coats annually for the next 8 years. It did seem to slowly reduces the shine a bit over the 6 months - but it was always black & clean - I would guess I will be applying a couple coats annually to maintain the sheen I have now. But I wont ever have to clean them - until I get new tires.

Also, the tires feel really smooth & "nice" - kinda when you just wax your car - NNNNNNICE!

Anyway, here are some pics - just my 2 cents.

Very informative!

I would hope the tires look good 6 monthes later, on a show car, LOL! Not slammin' yah but we're mainly talking about DD's here and only recently has someone mentioned a side by side test. The part about using a drill to scrub the tires clean to get Tuff Shine to adhere well, that kinda sucks and everyone said as much too! This TW kit is KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid and so far, it has without a doubt!

Btw, love the classic S/S Cragers on the Stang!

I have to agree. This is not a TW vs Tuff Shine thread. I also agree with Klasse Act on the price of TW being cheaper than ordering Tuff Shine online including shipping costs.

The maintenance for TW is just as easy as Tuff Shine.

How long are you guys getting out of it before you need to reapply?

I got 2 months out of 2 coats. I did not follow up with another coat because I was trying something else out.

I would like to see a comparison between the 2 coatings, seperate thread so it doesn't get lost in the sea of other posts here. The test needs to be one product on one side and the otheer one on the other side, no fronts and backs, I think you guys know what I mean. In all honesty, brand new tires would be best, scrub them down real good, apply 2-3 coats of each product and let it begin!

Anyone have both products to do this?

I hear ya - its only a "show car" because I go to a lot of shows and it did come out better than I thought (after 4 years building it)

But - I primarily built it as a cruiser, and to run on the track (auto cross) - It never rides on a trailer & I run it pretty hard.
So far in the 6 months since I finished it I have almost 5,000 miles on it - not quite a Daily Driver, but I drive it a lot & the Tuff shine really holds up well - even in the rain. - yea, I spend way to much time cleaning it - the curse of a black car!

Speaking of K.I.S.S. - I am all about that! Simple & EASY. But I agree, scrubbing the tires is a PIA, thats why I got the brush for the drill - make it way easier. After that, you never have to apply anything. Just wipe down & go - Ive gone several weeks without wiping em down & they look good.

Mostly I like the stuff because its dry & not tacky or greasy & seems to last forever - well, at least 6 months so far.

I am curious about the TW stuff - haven't come across that -

I have no real attachment to Tuff Shine, only that its the best thing I have found so far - but I haven't tried everything

For me, the one time scrubbing beats having to apply a tire dressing all the time - to messy - at least the variety of stuff I used to use - I would have to wear rubber gloves & a sponge & a bit of a mess every weekend. Then it build up & flings around. Maybe I was just using sub-par dressings all that time.

I's like to see a comparison between TS & TW as well - if there is something better than Tuff Shine, Im all for that!

Note: The classic Cragars really aint Cragars - they are Rocket Wheels - 'Fuel"... remember Rocket wheels back in the day, they are back in business as of 2010 I believe. They are true 5 x 4.5", 45° lug wheels... not the Uni-lug that my old Cragars use - I HATED the unilug - I like wheel removal to be easy.

Anyways - interesting post.
One cool thing I learned in the past year on Autogeek forums is that I can start out searching/looking for a particular product because it looks like what I want, & people will chime in about their experiences with that product & then with other products they find to be better/worse & you become introduced to way more products & options than you thought ever existed. And for me, reading what more experienced detailers have to say helps me understand the way products & techniques are used to get the best results for each person. Thats how I found Tuff Shine, and The Pinnacle line of polishes & my Flex DA, good Microfiber towels... the list goes on! Thats why Im here on Autogeek - I was just using auto parts store products for years on my last Mustang - then when this car came out so nice, I wanted to step up to better quality detailing & Autogeek forum had helped me out a lot, Most of my cruising friends just dont get it.... yet.

We are not even trying to say it's better. It was a new option in April that came out OTC and for a very reasonable price. You can even buy it for 11.19 at advance auto parts locally if you have one with a coupon code. I am picking up another kit today to have on hand in case they decide to stop making it, also getting the trim coating to put in my trim since I have a new car and want to try it out instead of PERL or DLUX for fun.

Thanks for the tip on the coupon code, where would one find this?

Go to the Turtle Wax Facebook site and you can download the $7 mail in rebate for both their new Jet Black Tire and Trim products.
You may also find it at your local auto parts store.
I purchased both and just mailed in the rebate form.
This stuff really lasts and I love that I only need to hose it down every time I wash my car and the tires look like new. And NO SLING!!!!

I wish I knew this before I bought by back up box, LOL! From the price, to ease of use, the durability or NO SLING, you just can't go wrong with it!

In a short period of time this product has rocketed to the rarified air of rinseless washes for me as for as break through products, bar none!!

Oh yeah this stuff is very good, I get a feeling from some of the replies in these threads that people have their noses turned up at it because it's not boutique and not the other tire coating that costs much more

Rebate started yesterday darn I guess for that price I could buy another lol although it will take a long time to actually use a bottle of the tire stuff. Not that it has stopped a autogeek before from buying more

I agree Matt, I think I even posted as much a while back. IIRC I said if you raised the price, changed the name and gave it some goofy "play on name" and artistic package it would sell, get certain forum members behind it, the skies the limit.

Sure its from an old company that hasn't quite kept up with times but it looks like they're making an effort and with their rinseless wash and now this tire coating they've shown the commitment IMO. I'm going to bet that not one person is going to complain about how much they have to clean a tire to get THIS product to work properly and I guarantee that NOONE is going to have an issue with browning and/or cracking.

***UPDATE***

Here's my tires after 3 weeks and 1 day. At that time I cleaned them with Purple Power and then did a rinseless wash, so they were cleaned twice. I then applied 2x's TW tire coating, this is the result after 3 weeks and 1 day, DD here too:

Looks good, enjoy that car instead of the work van

I am, drove back home to the D this weekend to visit friends and family and enjoy Woodward Avenue! Also met Chet (Hoyt66) at the weekly cars and coffee on Woodward, very nice guy! Ironically enough he has Tuff Shine on his car, looks good as well.

I should say that after looking at my above pic my tires look silver but rest assured they infact have a nice sheen still, just the lighting.
