Collinite - Sealant or Wax

sealant first, then wax...the wax acts as the sacrificial layer, leaving the sealant generally unharmed, and you can keep topping with wax as much as you want/need, prolonging the sealant's durability.

thanks for the responses. Appreciate it! would one ever top a sealant with a different one or is it pointless?

Overkill and diminishing returns I would think, I've never done it, I do the combo of sealant then wax, but even then, you don't have to add the wax unless you just want to.

Thanks.. I think I'm looking for a way to try out all the sealants I have without having to wait the few times a year I use them after claying, etc. I went BOGO over board :bolt:

You can try all the sealants you own, one on your car, another on the alloys, another on your girlfriend's car; so on and so forth :)

I have used 845 as a LSP on top of Menzerna Sealant, so I use it as a wax. I get about a month of protection before I top it off with either more 845 or something else.

If you only get a month with Menzerna/845 combo, then something is not right. I live in Nassau County and while I do not drive everyday, my vehicle is not garaged. I am on month 3-4 and 845 is as strong as it was on day one.

mwoolfso, you are surely right. I put either 845 or 472 on my cars in November in order to protect the cars during the winter. It's just that in warmer weather I'm looking to add a coat of wax on a more regular basis just for the fun of it.

What are some other better and more durable options than old school Collinites? Opti Seal, DG 105, UPGP, BFWD; what is the class leading product that puts Collinite to shame?

I use 476 for my winter wax, I don't drive my car in the winter I just park it for 3 months or so on tender and before I tender it I use the 476 and it lasts throu winter and into spring with no problem. used 845 in the past and it lasts but just not quite as long as 476, both great waxes for longevity but don't have the warmth of other regular waxes but since I use them as a winter barrier the warmth isn't really important to me.

View attachment 21188I've used most of the Collinite products since I was practically in Diapers.

Here's my take.

Putting a sealant, any sealant, even if it was Opti-Coat under Collinite, is almost like putting Turtle Wax over Wolfgang Fuzion.

It is unnecessary, it is unneeded, there is really no benefit, the Collinite will do its job, and do it admirably all on its own.

Just like you folks don't suggest placing a Sealant over a Carnauba, you most likely won't get a benefit of looks, or longevity placing any Collinite product over a regular Sealant.

Why?

Because virtually any Collinite product made WILL last longer than the sealant you apply it over. IME, just wasting money, time, and hard work.

While I have some higher tech products on my ole 16 year old Tahoe, one reason why I believe it still looks so good today is Collinite.

One week out of the Dealer, it was protected with #476 Super Double Coat. Then it went through 6 salt ridden Chicago Winters, in the snow, sitting in an Amtrak Railroad Yard Parking Lot every day 6 years straight.

Then another 10 years of brutal New Mexican Desert Sun, and Dusts-Winds.

This pic here was right "before" it was treated to the Wolfgang Polishes, and WGDGPS 3.0. Note all the masking tape on the trim, etc.

That's what's happening in my "fleet" this winter.

Mine and my wife's car are getting the standard Klasse twins treatment using pre-owned inventory. My daughter's car is getting the Collinite 845 for a head-to-head test.

I'm looking forward to it.

You should post a review after you're all done:-)
