Working a 2009 Mustang, guessing it has a clear coat. Did they come with a one stage paint? I'm pulling color off the car using m105? Oxidation? Anybody know what's going on? Paint looks beautiful, just never seen color come off like so. Red mustangView attachment 53439

Is this the factory paint, or was it re-sprayed at some point?

Also, is this happening on every panel on the vehicle, or just one spot?

I don't think the paint is single stage, so it could've been resprayed and possibly be overspray of the base coat on top of clear, or re-sprayed with a single stage paint.

The whole vehicle.

Paint is measuring 4.5 to 5.5 mils. Looks to be factory. It's just puzzling me. No way have a burnt the clear to the paint.

Sounds like its tinted clear your working on.

Tinted clear is more or less adding base coat in with the clear coat.

GM does the same thing, mostly on reds. The most popular was labeled Crystal Red Tintcoat, obviously indicating a tinted clear.

I believe the reds, oranges and yellows for the Special Edition paints are all tinted clears for a lot of American manufacturers so I wouldn't worry about it.

Like everyone said it is tinted clear, it just shows that indeed you remove paint when you polish.

For what it's worth...

I have an article on this topic with some great pictures showing the difference between,

  • Single stage
  • Tinted clear
  • Clearcoat that's stained - The point being when you buff it you shouldn't see any COLOR coming off the car and if you do it's probably a brown/grey/blackish color and that's a sign of dirt stained paint.

Single Stage Paint - Tinted Clears - Basecoat/Clearcoat - Embedded Dirt

Here's just ONE picture from the article from the section on tinted clearcoats.

Here you can see the tint in the tinted clear coming off the car as we compound it and onto the face of the pad. This is nothing to worry about, keep in mind when you're doing any correction work on a clearcoat paint system you too are removing paint that is building up on the face of your buffing pad but because the paint is clear you won't see it build-up on the face of your pad.

And for any of you that read this into the future and wonder how paint can get dirt, check out this article, it explains the issue in detail with pictures that tell the story...

The paint is clear and the brownish color is years of dirt staining that builds up ON the paint and doesn't wash off. It does come off when you use a compound, polish or cleaner/wax.

Awesome. Thank you so much. Your willingness to help others and myself is the reason I purchase from your store. Thank you!
