Commuting for work - how far is too far?

Right now I drive 2 miles to a job I don't like, terrible hours, and during the school year I don't get to see my family. (My wife works for the school district, I work Wednesday till 10pm Friday 9-8 Saturday 8-730, Sunday 8-730). During the summer I get three days with my wife and kids.
I am considering a job 28 miles away it will take 50 minutes each way. It will be better hours M-F 7-4, doing what I know I like. It is back in the industry I like and understand and with what I would consider my "dream company".
The problem is it's in a very volatile industry and even more current market. And locally has a very up in the air public view. The commute has never crossed my mind as bing bad or too far.

I can say with certainty that 1000 miles is too far to commute to work.

To be fair, I was making this trip on an airplane once a week. Still too far.

Congrats on the new job. I'm sure you will be happy. I'm a CCIE myself and work for a Cisco Gold/Master partner and get to work from home a lot. I love my job and career. I think you will too as long as you can commit to it and sacrifice what is needed to attain the goal. It took me 3 years to get mine and a few trips to RTP and San Jose but I stuck w it. Hardest part was having a baby boy during the journey. It was hard leaving him on weekends so I could go to my lab and study. I also studied 4-6 hours every night. The guilt consumed me. Overall it was a good experience and well worth it to me because my family has everything they need.

What I like most about the field is how it is ever evolving so there is always something to learn and keep you busy. These days I'm trying to learn Python and Automation and messing around w APIcs. I'm old school and prefer CLI but realize where things are headed so it's either adaprt or become obsolete. I'm adapting. Congrats again.

Once again, I am truthfully thankful for all the input from my fellow Geeks!

I have accepted the position with my start date on June 5th.

Thanks again for being a great sounding board to go over the pros and cons, and sharing some of the personal experiences many of you have had with your commutes/careers.

Congrats, hope you love the new job ;)

I have been driving 2 hours round trip each day for 35 years to a job I have hated since day one. A Guy does what he needs too to put food on the table and roof over his families head , so if its a job you love I say by all means accept the position...it's a small price to pay for happiness IMHO !
