Got a new black 2013 Kia Optima. When I got it I noticed that around part of the trunk there was a line of what looked like 'sticky' that the company had used to hold the plastic over the car to protect the paint until it made it to the dealer.

Like a moron I took it back to the dealer for them to remove it so I didn't scratch the paint trying to get the sticky off.

Got it home and about 2 days later I inspected the trunk. Sure enough, all the sticky was gone but....................

Now there are three or four light scratches (from 2 inches to about 5 inches) and some light swirl marks....obviously their detailer didn't know what the crap he was doing or how to detail a car.

My question is: should I use some Meguiar's Ultimate Compound* on the trunk to see if it will take some of the scratches and swirls out or not?

If not, is there anything I can use by hand that will remove the scratches without harming the brand new finish?

Thanks for your help.

*used this on a black 2002 Honda Accord (that will become my daughters in a month) that hasn't been waxed in probably 5 years and it has a deep black shine that I never thought could be possible on that car again. It didn't take out all the scratches and swirl marks, but was it did was amazing.

I would start off with a polish first too see if that works

Agreed, but if you already have the UC then you can use that since you will be doing it by hand. The added aggressiveness of the UC might work better for you. No sense in buying something that you don't need or may not use on a regular basis.

All I currently have is the Meguiar's Ultimate Compound and Meguiar's Ultimate Quik Detailer. If I purchase polish, what would you suggest?

Is there any chance that the Ultimate Compound would make matters worse or hurt the new finish at all?

Thank you the help!

If UC is all u have I would delute it since ur working on a black car...work it insoftly.

I had some dealer installed scratches on my optima too. M205 with a white cutting pad fixed for me.
Btw which did u go with lx ex or sx?

Shouldn't hurt it. Possibly grab some Ultimate Polish or Mirror Glaze 205 to clean it up afterwards.

correct - UC is very pad sensitive - go light and it will act light - follow with ultimate polish...you'll be fine...

I got the LX...I had to go as cheap as possible...my daughter turns 16 in October ($1950 insurance increase) and my wife got a new Kia Sorento. Kinda straped for cash, if ya know what I mean.

What did you get?
