Does anyone on here have any magic tricks to remove compound, swirl mark remover and finally wax, build up on vinyl trim?
This has been an annoyance for me for many years.
You do a nice buff job using a rotary machine, then go back and remove swirl marks with what ever suits you best , then you toss a coat of what ever wax you love.
Now you stand back and look at it BEAUTIFUL.
Except for the white compound, swirl mark remover and wax, you deposited onto the black vinyl.
Typically I use lacquer thinner to clean it off,, then hit it with a dressing.
Does anyone have any secrets ?
Thank you in advance for the replies.

That is a great secret but in reality masking the vinyl is problematic because most of the vehicles I do work on are pretty clean and people typically treat the vinyl. Now the masking tape does not want to stick !
So typically I will hand work the paint up near the molding but as we all know you sometimes get a scratch real close to the vinyl and have to water sand and buff it. Yesterday I had the problem, I did wash the vinyl with solvent, masked it off, and finished the job. But another time consumer. Time is money and I try to keep the detail costs to a minimum and my customers are a little happier.
Thanks again for the response !

There is no easy way.

And people ask me,

"Mike, why do you like to work on classics, muscle cars and street rods so much?"

And the answer is because I really dislike all the plastic trim used on the exterior of modern cars.

I write a lot of articles on how to tape it off and cover it up because in reality, if you don't want to "detail" it later, then cover it up in the first place.

My definition of detailing

"Polishing paint is polishing paint, detailing is getting the wax out of the cracks"

The reason masking tape won't stick to some plastic trim is because someone has already applied a dressing to it. That is a problem and again, there's no easy way around having to then clean off the trim to get masking tape to stick.

That's how this industry goes.

The chemicals in the Meguiar's Microfiber DA Correction System are actually designed to be low staining. Northing's perfect but this "system" does go a long way towards making production detailing faster by "helping" to cut out the need to tape off and later clean up.

I'm the king of taping off cars.... and I've never liked it... but I do it because I dislike detailing cars after the buff-out even more.

I also document it to help others...

It's just part of the job that none of us really like...

No simple answers, no easy out...
