So I'm just curious what you guys use (pad-wise) for compounding difficult sections by HAND only.

I have these little round white microfiber covered applicator pads, or a microfiber cloth..just whatever I can find handy. Seems to be working well for me.
 
Microfiber or terry cloth for aggressive defect removal

Foam for light defect removal

If you start with a fiber material, (microfiber or terry cloth), then do some cover passes to ensure no marring using foam.

The go to wax...

I did the work to test FG 400 after you made this post and then wrote this article. Had to do this because sometimes you can't always get a pad on a rotary buffer into tight areas to remove sanding marks safely.
