Hi all,
My name is John and I am a newbie from fl. I recently bough a porter cable 7346sp to do the detailing on my new camaro. But I have no idea what pads I will need. I have been told by some to pick up the meguiars Velcro backing plate. Other than that I am lost! There is nothing wrong with the paint yet so it would be for more polishing and buffing it out tons great shine. Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated!

John

The good news is, you came to the right place. Honestly, it's going to be difficult to tell/suggest what you need without knowing the condition of your new camaro. Are there any swirls/rids/paint defects that you want to remove via da polisher? I would definitely suggest a clay kit - no matter what. You can look into opti-coat if you're looking for a long lasting durable finish. Give your camaro a hand wash and dry then take some photos and post them up. That'll give us a better idea of what pads/polishes you may need. You'll definitely need to research these forums regardless however.

:welcome: To Autogeek Online John! :props:

I have some great product recommendations and if you'd like I can post them for your viewing and reading pleasure...

Foam Pads

To simplify pad usage, here's a generic usage of pads and products. Stick with the 5 1/2" flat pads as they work best with the Porter Cable style polishers.

Compounding

  • Compounds or aggressive products are generally used on firmer pads, Yellow, Orange, and Green.
Polishing

  • The Green, White and Gray pads are generally used with polishes.
Sealants & Wax

  • Use either a Blue or Red foam pad for applying these
Meguiar's DA Microfiber Correction System.

  • Meguiar's really hit a home run with it's Dual Action Microfiber Correction System. It's simple, effective, and works very well.

Basic steps in order are:

  • Wash
  • Clay
  • Paint Correction & Polish
  • Seal
  • Wax
Dual Action Polisher

1. - Working with a dual action polisher

2. - My Porter Cable 7424, backing plate, and pads

Welcome to AGO!

The other people know more about pads than I, so they'll steer you right.

Thanks bobby! That's one heck of a list there. How often do you do that? Being that both of my cars are less than 2 months old I am hoping there isn't too much to do. I know one has some swirls that need to be corrected.

my goodness, you got 2 new cars and you are gonna "practice" on them with a porter cable 7346sp. Let us know how that goes!

You're welcome!

Actually, I do it quite a lot and I like to provide links to specific products making it easier for readers to navigate the site which in itself can by quite daunting...

Lol, yup! I will practice on the wife's car before I touch my new camaro!

Is there a better one for a novice to use?
