First of all hello to everyone. New to the Forum. I don't know if this is the forum for these questions. Just bought a Griots 6 3rd Gen. DA. Will be using Meguiar's products. I emailed Meguiar's with questions on products to use for my situation: Their response: Ultimate Compound, Ultimate Polish, Gold Class Carnauba Plus, 6.5" Soft Buff Yellow Pads, I will be doing the wax by hand. My question is the Griot comes with a 6" backer plate, so should I use that with the 6.5" pads? They didn't recommend any particular backer plate but I assume from their website they use 5 inch backer plates with the 6.5 inch pads. So will my Griot Polisher be ok with the larger pads or do I need to use like a Lake Country 5.5 inch pad and if so what kind of pad? Thanks for any advice you can give me.
 
Hey Dennis and :welcome:

If you're planning on doing compounding and polishing, I'd suggest getting a 5" backing plate for your GG DA and then using 5.5" pads - just a little easier to maneuver IMHO. You can use the 6.5" pads if you want - you would indeed use the 6" backing plate with the 6.5" pads.

Depending on what you're working on, I'd suggest (just basic recommendations) orange Lake Country pads for the compounding, white for the polishing and black / cyan (I think) for applying wax. Do a test spot and start with the least aggressive first!

Thank you very much for the fast response! Another question. Lake Country makes quite a few different kinds of pads, dimpled, flat, etc., so what would you recommend? Sorry for the newbie questions, but I want to do this the right way. Thanks!
 
Welcome to AGO Dennis.

The Griots machine has enough power to spin just about any pad you wish to use with it. Their liquid recommendation is great.

For their pad recommendation those can not be machine washed or the VELCRO material on the pad will come loose. If you want to use Meguiar's pads then use the 7" soft buff pads. These are great and are machine washable. You will want to use their backing plate W68DA as its made to fit the soft buff pads perfectly. This will be your setup if you choose to use it.

They have a maroon cutting pad in 7" soft buff format but these are not advisable to use on a DA being that they are more formulated to be used on a rotary due to the construction of the pad.

The other two pads are great for a DA. The yellow W8207 polishing pad would be used for Ultimate Compond and the black finishing W9207 pad would be used for Ultimate Polish.

First and foremost which pads do you wish to use? Meguiar's or Lake Country?
 
Thanks for the response. I really don't know which brand. Lake Country has so many different kinds of pads, but if I want to use the Lake Country pads what would be your recommendation as to size and type of pads. They make dimpled, plain flat, etc. So what would you recommend for size, backing plate sized and type of pad? I just need to make a decision as to Meguiar pads or Lake Country pads. Thanks. Dennis

For a Lake Country setup I recommend their 5" plate with low profile 5.5x7/8 pad size.

Here is the backing plate.
lake country 5 inch backing plate, 5 inch backin plate, 5 inch hook and loop backing plate

I really enjoy these pads as they are closed cell construction allowing the liquid to stay on the surface rather than being absorbed by the foam. Eventually the pad will become saturated by the liquid but at a much slower rate than an open cell design.
