Is there no market for such an animal? I have no cordless tools at all, so I don't know if run time would be an issue. I don't know about costs either. But on the face of it, it would seem like a good idea. Thoughts?

Honestly it would probably not enough power and or drain the battery too quickly. I have Meguiar's DA Power System and with my cordless drill there is no correction power. Now given that has a step down on it but still the issue of battery power and probably the additional weight issue.

The battery required to make it run any length of time would make it really heavy and bulky. Cordless tools tend to drain fast under load and a DA would be under a pretty good load just to make a 5 or 6 inch pad orbit not to mention how much the load would be when you put pressure on the tool when you are correcting somthing. So i don't see it being feasible or practical. Somone pretty clever might be able to use the orbit of the tool to help charge the battery while in use though.

I think so, vehicle manufacturers use cordless tools for extended periods of time for their jobs. Also, folks like Makita have produced a chainsaw that runs on two li-ion batteries.

I laugh because I was thinking of this as well, I have no corded or gas powered tools and they've never let me down. My trimmer can chew through several thousand feet of grass and have enough power left to blow my driveway and other areas.

My bet is that this will happen sooner than later as battery technology improves.

Actually I wanna revise what I said. It's not going to happen right NOW. But I have no doubt that eventually it will happen as battery technology vastly improves. Like anything we use, the battery tech will be there and wouldn't surprise me if it happened soon. With how many battery operated devices we use, and one of the main things that hasn't improved are the batteries.

It can be done but would take a strong team of engineers, lots of money, and many many hours of research & design. Not sure any of the tools manufacturers want to shell out money for that right now. Maybe in a few years somebody will give it a shot...

Is the cord irritating your shoulder?

I run it thru the passant on my Members Only jacket, so it doesn't slip off and damage the paint.

Honestly, once you get cord management down, the problem is not worth any perceived convenience. A powerful DA, e.g., Griots pulls 7 amps or roughly a n HP!

Those would be ok for small sections but hard to do a entire vehicle correction. I would be weary of the battery quality on the two posted, if you had a quality battery pack the idea is not far out there for a home enthusiast. Or for LSP application, etc.

A cordless polisher would be a massive advantage for mobile smart repairers, and us home enthusiasts. I do notice that an orbital one has just been launched in the UK market FYI. It's called the iVo OrbiPro. Looks pretty powerful - it's being promoted for many tasks, but looks like the power is there. Might ship to USA i don't know, as i'm in the UK I think I'm going to try.

Back in the 80's, I bought my first cordless drill, a 9.6 volt Makita. After that came 14.4 volt and 18 volt Dewalts. Each step got me more muscle and longer run time, which was offset by the penalty of additional weight and bulk. Now, the one that gets the most use is my 12v Bosch Pocket Driver, since it's just so damn convenient for small jobs or on a ladder. This may sound off the wall, but think about it for a minute; How about a hybrid cordless polisher? You could have a big battery, up to 40 volts that you'd set on the floor, with an 8-10 ft cord to the polisher. You'd get the benefits of power and run time without having to support the weight on vertical panels and a short cord would be a lot easier to manage than a 25 or 50 footer.
Maybe I should apply for a patent and a seat on "Shark Tank"!

If Milwaukee came out with one in their m18 fuel range I believe that would work pretty well. I see they have a rotary 7" out now and would guess it works pretty well. I have a couple of the M18 Fuel tools and they are quite amazing as far as power and battery longevity goes. What I have are a plain drill (2704) and an SDS rotary hammer(2712). I used both last Sunday drilling some holes for my daughter to mount a mirror and a few pictures in her masonry walls and a few 3/8" holes in her concrete patio to mount a 4 post steel frame shelter of some sort and still showed full charge on the battery.

Right now I believe that they have the tech to make a DA that will combine enough power and longevity to make on feasible. And if one is looking for a portable rotary I would say they have one now. I would guess that anyone who has used any of the high drain tools of theirs would agree.

the closes thing I found when I was looking was this

some replies are very pessimistic, there are cordless chainsaws with dual batteries, why the hell can't there be cordless polishers ?!?...
