Cotton vs. microfiber

You'd love the new CG micro-cotton (cotton-MF) towels. Best of both worlds.

I just picked up a few of CG's dark blue/black 530gsm towels. My impression is they are very nice for their discounted price. They dont feel quite the same quality as Cobra Miracle towels, and they have a tear-off tag, but at their discounted 3$ a piece price they seem like a great towel.

No undies, not enough material after cutting off elastic and sewed seams. On tee shirts, I cut off sleeves, collar, and bottom stitching so all I have is a plain sheet of cotton.

I absolutely only use old towels. Also cut off any seams.

Is it ok to use old whitey tighties?

LOL :laughing::laughing:

Once, long ago, I discovered using the Wife's whitey-tighties was not cost effective. Nowadays, though, by using her "granny-panties", it seems to 'stretch' the bottom-line. :D

I've used about everything, diapers, t-shirts, towels (no on the undies), now using micro-fiber, I like to color code for different uses, and think the waffle weave for windows is better than anything I've used before. I like the no lint results.

The thick mf polishing towels remind me of a plush bath towel or robe.

I have old towels and rags to use on interior carpets and nasty stuff.

Good grief. Hope she doesn't read this forum. lol :dig:

I walked up on an older gentleman waxing his mom's car with a pair of white briefs. It kinda weird'd me out. Just made me wonder if they were freshly used as I stood there trying to give him some detailing pointers. "Dirty undies huh?... Well, see ya' later!" LOL
I used cotton T-shirt as kid to polish my toy car and RC cars growing up. Then I found MF and only use T-shirt when I am applying Klasse or working with paint touch up.
I think everything has its place. Cotton just can't clean as well as MF, yet cotton can rinse cleaner because the fiber aren't woven so densely. To each his own. All depends what I am doing and what is on hand.:)

:bump2:

This is what got me to test for myself.

Find something you like and use it often.

I use both MF and old flannel shirts with the seams cut out (make sure 100% cotton).

From what I've noticed, MF seems to work better for rinseless and waterless washes because of it's ability to grab dirt.

I think I prefer cotton for wiping polish and wax because I don't have to worry about the polyester edging marring my paint.

What's Mike Phillips' opinion on this? =D

I'm just the opposite (imagine that) I use Microfibers exclusivly for interiors and Cotton for exteriors. I like Microfibers on interiors because they don't tend to snag like Cotton can

If Microfiber was better then Cotton, Brooks Brothers would be making their shirts out of it

Cotton is King...

It is good to see you back

Flannel, that is a soft cotton material has a flat surface like a T-shirt and a diaper, I would never use either to wipe any type of paint in good to excellent condition when any other material with some type of weave surface is available.

I don't mind using cotton towels to wipe off compounding residue because the more stout nap works good to loosen the grip of compounds off paint with less energy expended by me.

Terry cloth tends to be more aggressive against that paint then a soft microfiber towel but if a person is going to re-polish after compounding, any terry cloth marring will be removed so it's a mute point how gentle terry cloth is to paint during the compounding step.

After the compounding step anything that touches the paint needs to be the highest quality you can obtain.

The below article kind of touches on this topic...

The 4 minimum categories of wiping cloths

Good Cotton Towels
While microfiber is superior at removing polishes, waxes and paint sealants off paint, and especially trace residues off smooth, high gloss finishes, there's still a place for good quality cotton towels. For example, cleaning you pad on the fly. Cotton towels with a large nap work better than microfiber towels. Some people prefer a cotton towel with a large nap to remove compounds because they offer a more aggressive bite but then switch over to microfiber for removing polishes and LSP's. Your good cotton towels should be clean and soft and worthing of working on paint in good condition or better.

That's been my experience. I know for a fact, I get swirls (micro marring) and the only thing that has touched my paint is a microfiber towel to dry or apply and remove product. And I don't buy cheap micros. Very frustrating when this happens after spending so much time to get perfect paint.

Going to conduct my own test. Polish to perfection, then nothing but cotton on the finish and see what happens. I'm of the opinion that all the hype over microfiber is just that, hype by companies wanting to sell microfiber towels. Hard to promote cotton that is available everywhere as an old tee shirt or diaper.
Which mf towels give you swirls? If the GSM is to low mf WILL REPEAT WILL mar your paint.

Try to find used 100% cotton. Garage sales, etc. Old tee shirts, diapers, towels. Wash them several times before using and inspect to make sure they don't have any glue, etc. that would scratch. Using your own old stuff is really the best. You know how that stuff has been treated.

You can get them from industrial supply stores that supply woodworking shops.

They use the cloth for staining wood as it has the same spreading characteristics that work well for detailing products.

Coincedence??

Can also get from AG Girots Garage 100% Cotton Towels
