on of my customers recently bought a Cessna and was asking if i could polish it and apply a coating. i told him i could for sure polish it, but i have to check on the coating.

has anyone applied coatings to a plane? if so how much product did it take?

that would be very expensive. i know the cessna probably isnt that big of a plane, but it's big enough to use a good amount of product.

Ive done many planes with coating last on I did was a pilatus pc 12 and bought 700 dollars worth of cq uk.we exchanged it out for blackfire coating,the cq was murderous to wipe off.2 bottles of blackfire did the whole plane.Boston Red Sox owner jet took 6 bottles of blackfire and 10 bottles of eraser.last week did a little bonanza which seats 6 coated one bottle and a half.make sure all carbon on plane is off by polishing,and under the plane use paint thinner to remove all the fuel residue.
 
Make sure the maintenance company at his hanger or airport will let you use their scaffolding
 
on big projects the lend me there lift.on small little planes a milk crate will work.

I would go with bf cheaper and easier to work with 2 bottles will be plenty,you might even get away with one but get 2 just in case.I sure you know not to use anything on the windscreen or the side windows and don't stand on any part of the planes wings.Big time liability if you were to break anything or someone gets hurt.
 
What model aircraft? Cessna has a few that are composite now. You also need to be careful on certain models when working with the leading edge as they may have an anti-icing system that uses fluid pushed through tiny holes on the wing called TKS.

I may not know much about detailing (why I'm here) but I've been a professional pilot for over 10 years.
 
Most smaller aircraft use single stage paint. If that is the case with the one you are working on just make everything is compatible, and even if the coating you go with can be used on single stage a lot of times it does not last nearly as long. I would consider using the Marine 31 coating.

Usually or every time a plane is done ,the owner or pilot will go over several key important topics about the aircraft,most importantly look for any damage such as dent scratches broken marker lights .no plane has ever been thrown to me without a prior consult with the owner or pilot.I leave the boots alone.
 
I declined a job from a single pilot plane that literally was made out of paper and resin no thanks.
 
Corvalis. Fastest single engine piston in production. Very nice.

The aircraft is all composite, so that may require some special attention/products.
