Hey guys, I am new to under the hood stuff, but I was wondering what the crank case exactly is?

Also I am planning to use seafoam and it says to put some into the crank case. Would this be where the oil normally goes and where the dipstick is? Thanks all!

Chris

The crankcase is the space within the oil pan and the lower end of the engine block. The dipstick extends in to the crankcase.

It contains the crankshaft/connecting rods/pistons /oil pump/The cylinder heads bolt too the crankcase. The oil pan holds the oil and is bolted to the bottom of the crankcase. This has been crankcase 101 !!

Actually the dip stick passes through the crankcase and into the oil pan so you can tell how much oil is in the engine.Lucky i know more about engines then i do detailing:D

Seafoam is good, but use it outdoors and far away from your neighbors. It will smoke initially (almost disturbingly so) as it cleans the carbon. I would recommend changing the oil shortly after the Seafoam treatment (as it is harsh for long periods in your motor oil)

I always had good luck with BG44K and their products personally ... I believe I was told using Seafoam can effect/damage oxygen sensors.

that is true. most that use seafoam will just pull their o2 sensor out and let the car idle for a bit. i dont believe in that stuff at all just like all the octane enhancing additives. the only additive that makes any sense is adding diesel kleen/2 stroke oil to a full tank of diesel.
