:rant:Oh boy what a cluster hump today.

:awman:
Started to take a little 'alcohol rub' after claying to my G and freakin' DROPPED the little rag I had right on the clear bra!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you KIDDING ME?!?!:mad::mad::bash::mad::mad: SunofaBEACH!!!!:nomore:

The worst part is I had just finished buffing it ever so lightly, put sealer on it, AND waxed it. I mean good Lord does it melt that stuff fast. :(

If there is anything positive about this at all is the only damage is to the single piece on the hood. Nothing on the little pieces around the headlight or the headlight itself. And overall the bra is 6 years old and getting a few snafu's in it here and there.

But crap-n-crackers I don't need to spend money on this about now! Jus' sayin'.....:surrender:

Wait--you're saying you dropped an IPA-wet rag on your clear bra and it melted the bra??

Oh YES!!! :(

Tried everything and it's trashed. You can see my freaking hand print in it!

I did put a couple of coats of wax over it and it's a lot smoother, but still rough and will need to be replaced.

I'll get photos tomorrow and post.

Are you using strait alcohol?

Wait.....how in the world does alcohol just MELT a clear bra?

I love how you said "wait". That's what my son says all the time. ;)

And BOY would I like to know how it melted it!!!

I'll get those photos up tonight, phone's dead right now. (Freaking Samsung Galaxy)

Something else is going on here..... :dunno:

Clear bras are designed protect the finish and to hold up under a wide variety of hostile conditions it will encounter as we drive. To think that this same material will simply melt when it comes in contact seems somewhat confusing...

3M clear bra installation

Installation 3M Clear Bra Paint Protection Tampa, FL

3M Paint Protection

Application tools necessary:

  • Squeegee
  • (2) Heavy duty spray bottles
  • Baby shampoo (Do not substitute other soaps)
  • Isopropyl rubbing alcohol (70% solution)
  • Non Scratch Absorbent Cloths
  • Wax and Silicone remover

I understand what you are saying Bobby but putting straight 91 on it and im sure it will distort it.

Hopefully we hear from the OP and get some pics.

Something else is going on here..... :dunno:

[*]Isopropyl rubbing alcohol (70% solution)
[*]Wax and Silicone remover

These are to be used on the paint using 'proper techniques'...to ensure:
Clean-as-possible surface areas...prior to them being:
"Clear-bra'd"...
-Not for use-on/assistance-in/for: The clear-bra/PPF during its application.

Not saying it's not possible...
But I've never heard of IPA, at any strength (%) "melting" PPF.
Nor gasoline, naptha, methyl/ethyl alcohols, other solvents (?).

Of course...
I've probably never, ever allowed enough dwell-time for PPF to suffer a solvent melt-down.

Good thread subject OP!!
-I'll be checking up on this!!

While we are on the subject of 3m clear bras, my wife has one on her BMW which was installed before I was around to care for it properly. As a result, this thing has become the bane of my detailing existence. It has plenty of scratches and swirls from automatic washes, but unlike paint (which I can resurrect with a DA and polish of choice) I cannot remove the blemishes or find any product to conceal them.

Nothing is more frustrating than having a perfectly polished vehicle and a hazy, scratched plastic film covering the front end. I'm really to the point of just ripping the dang thing off and taking my chances with rock chips and other road hazards.

Does anyone have any last ditch effort suggestions or products that may help?

So why were you cleaning the paint around the clear bra with IPA anyway? Especially not diluted to the forum recommendation of no stronger than 15%?...
And amnbcn, have you tried a compound like Meg's ultimate? Can't hurt at this point; worst case you remove it and have a pro apply a new one as a Xmas present for your wife.;)

Sounds like the proper-care of the BMW's clear-bra/PPF was, indeed, sorely neglected...

Sure can't promise any miracles...But:
Please see the following:

http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum...65-clear-bra-installed-how-remove-swirls.html

NOTE:
-If no success is achieved by the below 'processes'...
-And you would decide to rip, or otherwise remove, the existing PPF...
-Don't give up on replacing the PPF, IMHO!
-Once you see how the underlying paint has been protected...You'll be totally sold on PPF

Friendly reminder...
Typing "Clear Bras" into this Forum's Search Function yields many, many more threads regarding this subject matter.

Yep that's the problem. Straight use of alcohol should never touch paint. You should be no higher than a mix of 12% when properly diluted with water.

I've got 91% & 70% then cut both with distilled water to 45% & 35%. I'll use them for wipe downs to cut AIO and waxes, as well as in cracks and crevices.
I've never had a problem with either of them on paint btw.

PHOTOS

What happened was I had the very bottom of an old bottle, had poured a capful and spilled it all over my hand and a corner (3"x5" buffing cloth one of those german made synthetic deals) in my other hand. When I made the mess, first instinct was to try and wipe it. BAD IDEA!!! Then I grabbed a MF towel, still bad idea. It would have been better if I'd just let it run down and catch it at the grill perhaps.

The photos are at a lower resolution 2.4mp I think, so I could e-mail them. Not the best lighting as it was a cloudy day today and I was dealing with overhead light only.

This one is dark but you can see my hand print in it, along withh some MF rag drags. the line at the top is the edge.

Better shot of the hand print and rag damage.

Across the hood, notice at the bottom in the body line there are smears and smudges. What you can't see is all the imprints from the rag. Then of course the 'famed' hand print!

Across the car, other side is OK.

I'd like to float the theory that the IPA didn't damage your clear bra, but partially dissolved the "sealer and wax" that you had just put on. I really don't see how IPA melts your clear bra.
