Grain came out nice but I don't want to ruin the nice light red color

You can also use a wipe on Poly, use a rag, do several coats. Easy as pie!

I second to do multiple coats and smooth. Another product if it will be in elements or stepped on alot with wet shoes is spar-urathane. I have built outdoor oak tile top tables and spar'd them 3 years ago and they are still in great condition. With multiple coats a fine grit sand paper may come into play just in case humidity plays a roll. good luck!

Finished the stool with 3 coats of poly

I applied it with one of the small paint brushes and then let dry. In between i used 240 grit sand paper to remove bumps and imperfections.
