I'm on the brink of purchasing a vx 5000 steamer and I guess you would be the one to ask this question. Is the steamer able do thoroughly clean stuff grease and gunk out of carpets?
A steam cleaner does a decent job at cleaning carpets and can certainly remove tough stains. However when a vehicle's cloth upholstery and carpet is packed with dirt and debris a steam cleaner isn't going to cut it. Sometimes you need the extra water flow that a hot water extractor offers to flush the fabric clean.
Although the steam cleaner doesn't excel at cleaning carpets it will certainly help you complete many detailing tasks (headliner, cup holders, door jambs, engine compartment, etc) that a carpet extractor cannot.
I hope that the following video gives you a better idea of what a steam cleaner is capable off. If I didn't have a hot water extractor I would have certainly passed on detailing this Toyota Prius.
