I was just sitting out on the porch petting one of the farm cats that was sitting on a small table next to me when I felt something sniffing my foot. I looked down and it was a small possum.

Darn near jumped out of my skin.

Always seems like there is a critter or two stopping up to scare the ba-jesus out of me. (raccoons, skunks, possums)

Then there is the fox den on the other side of the house in the back yard. This year we had 7 kits. They are always fun to watch. :dblthumb2:

Where do you live? lol

We need some pictures of these critters, us city folk never get to see them!

I have some raccoons that spend a lot of time at night hanging out in the "woods" behind the row of townhouses where I live. They are huge - like medium-sized dogs. And I live 7 miles from Downtown Pittsburgh, so it's not like I live out in the country. What's funny about them is that they never bother the garbage bags on garbage night. I would think that would be a banquet for them! I see a lot of deer as well...

I live on a farm near Shannon, Illinois

I will have to check and see if I still have any photos of the fox pups on the computer. I usually do not keep many on there because momma fox has had her spring litter up here for several years in a row so there is always plenty of opprotunities for pictures.

OOPS... just checked, I guess I dumped the photos off the computer already after emailing them to friends and family this spring.

The closest I ever got to a non-household critter like that was when I was out for an evening run and saw a raccoon crawl into a storm drain, about 15 ft from me. :P But that's pretty neat, fox pups!! :)

Boy, when I go to my families ranch in Boerne, TX, it's hard for me to sleep. The Labs are up all night long barking at anything that walks or moves out there. Especially wolves. I really am not able to sleep much since I'm a light sleeper and do not sleep much at all. I'm doing good to sleep 4 hours.

Just a little side note as far as racoons charging. They will make a lot of noise and charge as part of intimidation.

I usually clap my hands loudly and yell HEY! and take 1 or to steps towards them and they have always backed down (unless they are cornered then they will fight) even when they have their babies up next to our porch eating berries off of the bush.

All animals sense fear so if you accidentally find yourself in a situation with a charging racoon make yourself get mad and aggressive they will sense that you are not intimidated. But do not charge them let them retreat a few steps and then calmy move away.

Of course it is best to avoid wild animal confrontations all together but after spending my whole life on a farm I have been in these positions alot over my life.

And always beware of those night animals that are out during the day - they could have rabies.

Not wanting to spoil the thread, but I have to ask...

was anyone else expecting to see a wookie's fist?

I was walking my dogs the other day when a coyote walked out of a neighbor's yard and walked up the road.

I have seen opossums, raccoons, foxes, skunks, deer, beavers, coyotes, fisher cats, rabbits, red tail hawks, kestrels, turkey vultures and all kinds of songbirds in the neighborhood.

While I live in a city of 40K between Boston and Worcester, we have a lot of conservation land.
