I came across this article on the New York Times stating if you provide a good product or service, you should not be afraid to charge a higher rate. Customers frequently tie quality with how much is being charged.

"... a [customer] who told her she was doing a great job, but would not be taken seriously because her prices were too low."

What do you think?

I agree

Cheaper prices usually associate your service as a type of gimmick or it may seem too good to be true. It may also attract a certain crowd that wants everything for nothing.

Having higher prices may ward off some potential new customers and clients who think they would get the same service somewhere else but they may be disappointed with the results from the cheaper guy and go the the higher priced guy next time.

I'm looking at pricing mine right around where everyone ele's is in my area and offering a better product in the end. I want my customer to know they are getting a great service for the same price as the guy using armor all, yes there is a "professional" detail shop a couple minutes from me that smear armor all all over the place. Also when they pay for it they are going to associate the cost with the service they received and my job is to make sure they get what they pay for and a little extra to make sure they are more than pleased and to make the come back.

To me customer want higher end goods and services rather than the cheap stuff. Lower prices will attract a certain crowd, but I believe that higher prices will attract long term customers who appreciate a good service.

When it comes to someones car most of them want it done right so they are willing to pay for it.

This is just what goes through my mind with pricing.

Higher prices = high quality
lower prices = low quality

I'm higher than both people by me and I'm booked all the time. People are willing to more for my services cause my work is a higher quality.

I don't think people "want" to pay more. I think people want to pay more if they get higher quality in exchange for a higher price.

And yes, people to equate cost to perceived quality.

I've found this with my web business and my detailing business, and even my vacation rental. I've found:

1) People perceive a certain level of quality at certain price points (this varies by location.)
2) People will pay for quality.
3) Bargain shoppers can often be the worst clients (not always.)
4) Bargain shoppers are often simply "customers," people paying for quality will become "clients."

I'd rather do one $300 detail a week than six $50 details. It's a balance, and takes some perseverance to push through and have confidence.
