DA Polisher/Product Help Request

I am very partial to MEGS products as that is the only product I have used on all of my past and current cars, but I’m open to whatever yields great results! That being said, with my refund, I’m planning to buy my first DA system...I think I’m leaning to the PC or GG 6” DA system

If you like Megs, the new MT300 is getting rave reviews. If I didn't already have a Rupes, I'd be tempted to get one myself.

Hey All,

After doing my research, I came up with the following of which I hope to purchase tonight (quick feedback requested!). I know it is less than what you all recommended but I've got to start somewhere and maintain my budget for this; I am also saving for my wedding! Looking for thoughts/opinions. The products and pads combo are for me to correct the Corolla's paint and wax it as well as just wax my Impreza. Since I am new at machine work, I decided to stick with MEGS products and go with SMAT products to Bubba-Proof (thanks, Mike) my first attempt at paint correction. Thoughts?

AG sells 3 times as many PC's than GG and gets a fraction of the returns on the PC.

the GG6 has more torque/power, better ergonomics/features, and a great warranty. for someone who may not use it very often (maybe a few times a year if that), it's reassuring to know that if something does go wrong later down the line that GG will take care of you. between the two there is no comparison on which one I would personally choose, it out classes the PCXP in every aspect. porter cable needs to pay attention to detailing forums and see what the competition is bringing so they can make adjustments/improvements on keeping up with them...

GO TO Microfiber Tech (or The Rag Co) and get MORE TOWELS for LESS money.
The X2020 is only about a 300gsm towel and you REALLY need at least a 360 dual-plush towel , if not a 400 ultra fine unit to keep from putting swirls (in that Subaru paint).

The 530 GSM towel from Microfiber Tech can serve as a compound, polish, LSP, AND a drying towel. It's an amazingly versatile towel. :D

If you really want a drying towel, without fail, the Korean drying towel from Microfiber Tech is one of the best. (I like it better than even the Dry Me a River from TRC as it's a WHOLE LOT softer.)

However, If there is ONE towel worth getting from Autogeek, that'd be the Guzzler (foam core) drying towel. It's crazy absorbent, and doesn't wad up like many do.

The key with drying is to lay the towel flat, then pat or rub the back of it with an open hand. Just as long as you don't rub the towel all over the place, being as water has zero lubricity.

OK - Wolfgang Carpet and Upholstry Restorer Spray (1 QTY)

Can't go wrong with the "Ultimate Twins", nice products and extremely long working time for a SMAT based product. ;)

Make sure you AT LEAST get some samples of Wolfgang compounds/polishes.
I'd say add a bottle of Megs D300 as it's a great all around compound. It can cut, but it'll also finish well for a SMAT product.

OR....
Go for the gusto and get a bottle of Menzerna FG400. This is one of the most amazing all around products out there. It'll cut AND finish. Thing is... it finishes so much better than a cutting compound has any right to, it's amazing in fact.:xyxthumbs: :props::dblthumb2:

On hard paint it'll finish down with a single pad, just pull the pad and 'clean on the fly' and mist the area half way through then finish it down.

The trick (on softer paints) is starting with two pads, one orange (or white), then a white or blue (or red). Work the product a bit with both pads then 'clean on the fly' to both pads. Wipe the area down, then go back with your cutting pad and 3 pea sized drops of product and do 4~5~6 passes. Then VERY lightly mist the area with distilled water (if you see drops, or water runs down the panel it's too wet) and go back with the polishing pad for another 4~5 passes. While not a true 2-step it'll look like you did go with a 2-step. I call it a 1.5 step process. ;)

WHY? - MEGS Gold Class Carnauba Plus Premium Liquid Wax (1 QTY)
Much MUCH better sealant/waxes are at Autogeek.

Might as well just get Megs Ultimate Liquid Wax and keep up the 'synergy' with all your other Megs Ultimate products. :xyxthumbs: Another thought would be Megs M21 2.0 sealant as it's very affordable, pretty darned good, AND available locally. :)

YES - MEGS Clay Kit - G1016 (1 QTY)

OTAY - 3M Scotch 233+ tape (2 QTY)
I buy a ton of blue "delicate surface" painters tape for general purpose duty. For heavy duty stuff I'll break out the green 3M stuff, and even the little thin vinyl 3M stuff for sharp lines from time to time, but overall the stuff from Lowes/Home Depot will get you there.

cardaddy:
1. Why do you prefer the Foam Pad Brush to the duo Spur Cleaning Tool?
2. The Bonnett Kit for wax removal and buffing as the last act on the cars.
3. Since I am only using the orange and white pads for one car, why would I need more than one? I can understand for multiple cars but you should be able to use the cleaning on the fly, conditioner, etc to allow you to use on pad on the car. It's also a Corolla which is a very small car.
4. I've used the MEGS X2000 Water Magnet with GREAT success in the past and love this towel for drying. I never have to ring it out and it absorbs all the water without scratching the paint. I already have two so just getting one more for the Corolla.
5. I also LOVE the MEGS X2020 towels for general purpose and since they are soft, will use them when compounding/polishing to wipe off the excess. That's the only purpose they will serve.
6. The White Standard Carpet Brush can hook up to my GG6 and simplify removing the carpet stains that my current hand bristle brush just can't handle.
7. The MEGS UC, SwirlX, and UP are only going to be used on one car so I hope 16 oz. will get me through that! :props:
8. Will get some samples of the Pinnacle and Wolfgang products to test out.
9. The MEGS Gold Class Carnauba Plus has been used on all of my vehicles personally and to me, has a great life on the car through PA summers; I do plan to look into the Klasse sealant or related in the fall to gear up for winter but for the summer, I like the warm carnauba wax (plus I get to detail my cars more often!).
10. I've worked with the Ultimate Wax and was not impressed with the depth the added to the car, it is still on my car now (2 months later) doing its job, but it lacks that warm look.

Get the GG6 and at least a DOZEN 5½" pads. Being as cost is an issue, not only do the smaller pads allow you to work smaller, more curved areas, but they are CHEAPER too. :D

Get 4 orange, 4 white, 2 black, 2 blue and work from there. You may need more black and blue ones later but that's a start. It's a fact that you can use the white pads on more paint, with more products (both compounds and polishes) and they'll likely be your most used pads. Not a bad idea to get 6 of them actually.

With the GG6 on sale it's a no brainer. Advance Auto Parts has it online and if you search around you can find a 30% off coupon that they'll let you use. ;) (They WILL NOT let you use any discount on the 3" GG buffer though for some reason.) :dunno:

If you want a bare basic SMAT collection, I'd say D300, M205, UC and UP (might think about D302 for a extra fine cut polish) . That's going to get most anything done. If you really want to step it up for maximum cut you can get a bottle of M101, just STAY AWAY from M105 as it's not very user friendly, (especially new users).

You also mentioned you're thinking about microfiber pads/microfiber system. In that case, you need to get the Meguiar's Microfiber Correction System (in the 5½" size). It has a backing plate, 2 cutting pads, 2 finishing pads, a bottle of D300, a bottle of D301, and (as a freebie) a Meguiar's detailing apron.

There are two things you need.
One is to have plenty of pads, AT LEAST 4 if not 6 cutting pads of whichever color you find you need.
The other is to have plenty of microfiber towels.

Microfiber Tech has some very nice 360 GSM as well as 530 GSM towels for half what you'll pay for the same towel from a 'detailing' website. I'd say order 20~ 30 of at least the 360's and at least 10 of the 530's.

When you're compounding you can use 10~12 while wiping down the compound, then use 8~10 wiping polish, and finally... when you're doing your LSP, you'll have another 8~10 to use there as well. Using 5~6 towels can EASILYend up causing trouble when using them too long, too dirty, and on more than one type of product after you've spent a day or two buffing. Plus... it REALLY helps to have a decent wash load once you have finished a job.

I agree with everything here in regards to the Meguiar's compounds and polishes.

Everyone seems to bash the PC because they think it doesnt have enough power. AG sells 3 times as many PC's than GG and gets a fraction of the returns on the PC. I have a PC and I have never had an issue with it not having enough power.

With that said, many have said the GG vibrates even more than the PC, not sure never tried the GG. The new Meguairs MT300 is a nice tool. If I was just starting out, I would start with that tool. Its the best compromise of smoothness, weight, performance and price.

As far as products...the Meguiars pads are supposed to be great. Keep an open mind on compounds and polishes, there are so many good ones.

And note, you might only plan on using the tool a few times, but the reality will be, once you have it, you will end up using it a lot more often than you ever thought.

The PC is still a nice machine. Paired with the new thin Meguiar's foam discs or the DAMF discs the machine is very capable in getting the job done. But after using the MT300 I would consider getting that over the PC.

You don't need swirlx. UC and UP are more than capable of getting the job done. You may want to pick up a couple more water magnets. They are ok. The supreme shine microfibers towels are fine and will get the job done. I would pick up a sealant such as M21 or Ultimate Wax for something that offers longer lasting protection. I personally like M26 more than Gold Class. I agree with the pad brush. You may want to consider the new Meguiar's foam discs as well.

The flat LC pads ones would be my other recommendation in 2 orange, 3 white and 1 black.

You can use 2 finishing pads for an entire car as you arent overheating them nor removing anything from the surface.

Get more orange and white FLAT pads

Also, Menzerna products are probably the easiest to work with.

I was hoping to use the UP, then SwirlX, then UC if necessary in order to keep with the using the least aggressive product first.

Also, why are the flat pads better than the CCS pads?

I would actually pick up M205. It's more versatile and corrects better than UP.

Flat pads just work. I have used them with Meguiar's compounds and polishes and they work very well. I have since gone to the new Meguiar's thin pads which work a little better. Even paired with a PC.

Isn't M205 a polish and much less aggressive than UC and SwirlX?

In reading that link, it appears that the 205 is less "Bubba-Proof" than UC but I'm wondering if the aggressiveness of a cutting pad and the 205 is equivalent to the UC and a cutting pad, re: Consumer Line v. Professionals Line. I too look at the MEGS pads, but alas they don't have a 4" pad and the 3" pads seem to be a part of the Microfiber system.

bubba-proof? Not exactly sure what that means. I've used UP, Swirlx, UC, M105, M101 and D300 and if I had to start over and knowing what I know now I would choose the following:

Compound - UC or D300. I would not even recommend M105. I actually gave mine away to a member on the meguiar's forum. D300 on the new thin Meguiar's pads is amazing. It finished LSP ready and corrected very well. Working time between D300 and UC is about the same. I prefer the cut of D300 a little more. I still have UC but rarely use it.

Polish - M205. Overall a much more versatile product than UP. I still have UP but rarely use it. Both of these can accomplish what swirlx does. I gave my swirlx to a member on the Meguiar's forum. Save yourself some money.

Sealant - M21 or Ultimate Wax

Wax - M26

Pads - Meguiar's new thin foam discs in 5"

It is ok to have LC pads in 3" and 4" and have the larger Meguiar's thinner pads. Meguiar's has already said that there will be no 3" or 4" pads with their new pad design.

If you need items locally pick up the entire ultimate line up. It's more than capable of getting the job done.

YES again. :xyxthumbs:

The use of UC allows considerably longer working times than say, 105 (which it is derived from). Then you have 101 which hasn't been out but a couple of years and is MUCH easier to work with than 105 while still having maximum cut.

Meguiar's does indeed have 4" pads, I have a whole "spot kit" with them.

Meguiars Headlight & Spot Repair Kit

Meguiars Soft Buff 4 Inch Pads 6 Pack, Meguiars buffing pads, spot polishing pads

cardaddy: thanks! I couldn't find that for the life of me; what would your recommendations be in regard to number of pads in that case? I like the washable aspect of the MEGS pads.

I guess I will re-work my thoughts on what to buy.

I actually have SwirlX in my travel kit. Paired with Tangerine Hydrotech pads, It's my "one-step" polish, before sealing and waxing.

Both SwirlX, and Ultimate Polish have effectiveness beyond intended application depending on pads.

Menzerna FG400 compound and Optimum Hyper Polish. I've bought 5 or 6 compounds and 7 or 8 polishes, including Meg's products. I find these two to be very effective and very user friendly. The versatility of of the hyper polish is incredible. The difference in the cut with the different pads.
The Suburu probably has very soft paint. I've had no problems with any kind of marring using Hyper Polish on a finishing pad on Suburu paint. Just my .02

In doing additional research; I think I'm leaning more to:
Compound - UC (Bubba-Proof = Joe Schmo weekend warrior detailer = average consumer = hard to mess up using it)
Polish - Still torn; really enjoy the thought of SwirlX as being my lead off point in lieu of UC just in case that is enough to correct the Corolla's paint.
Sealant - Debating if I want to go this route now or wait until Fall (I'm the guy who waxes his car every month).
Wax - M26 from what I've seen, this is a pure yellow wax and has no cleaners unlike the Gold Class which I was previously unaware had cleaners in it but worked well as I've used it on daily drivers that required a cleaner anyway. This would be good for the Corolla after paint is corrected but I'm unsure if I should use it on my new Impreza or use a cleaner wax first then top with M26. The paint is only months old on my Impreza :props:
Pads - Still up in the air. MEGS pads look more simplistic in that there are only 3 choices but my thoughts are that the LC pads provide multiple pads to increase or decrease aggressiveness of my products used and allow me to branch out in the future. I guess this is my largest debate.

"Everyone seems to bash the PC because they think it doesnt have enough power. I have a PC and I have never had an issue with it not having enough power. "

I notice that as well, and also love my PC , I did an 04 Super White Corolla not more then a month ago ,the single stage paint was dead as can be . I did the entire car with Optimum Hyper Polish and Lake Country Orange Flat Pads and my PCXP w/ great results . Its in show and shine . I absolutely Love Optimums Line of Polishes , specifically Hyper Polish and Compound II . Hyper polish has made me look far ,far better then I am for sure . All with zero dust which I personally cant stand dust . It wipes off so easy it isn't funny , nice long working time as well .. I did not find Megs to be what many say it is . Quit the opposite for me personally .

I think however though, I would try and have a few different Brand polishes on hand , you may find one doesn't suite your learning curve whereas another may . That was some of the best advice I got , to have a few different polishes on hand . 4 days is a long time to wait should something go sideways on you . And pads ? I don't think you can ever have too many .

If at all possible I would do all I can to take up Dave on his generous offer , he has a way of conveying what's going on that makes it simple and clear to understand and you'll have fun in the process too which is what its about . Good Luck w/ your journey ,you came to the rite place :xyxthumbs:
